KANSAS CITY, Mo. - All five NCAA Championship qualifiers for the Navy wrestling team claimed a victory during the first day of the 93rd NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Andrew Cerniglia (165), No. 31
Danny Wask (174) and No. 20
Grady Griess (285) finished day one with a 1-1 record to secure an opportunity to wrestle in the consolation brackets of their respective weight classes tomorrow. The three can still place as high as third in their respective brackets.
As a team, Navy is in a four-way tie for 32nd place of 68 teams with Appalachian State, Rider and Virginia.
Key, who entered the tournament ranked 23rd in the nation, pulled off a huge upset in the opening round against a service academy rival. The senior scored the match-winning takedown with 28 seconds to go in the third period to beat No. 7 Sam Wolf of Air Force by a 4-1 decision. The victory is Key's first against an opponent ranked in the top 10 in his career.
Key took the mat against Wisconsin's No. 20 Shane Liegel in the second round. Liegel also delivered a major upset in the first round by beating No. 8 Bennett Berge of South Dakota State by a 9-1 major decision. Key once again made an excellent move late in the match to score a takedown and gain a 4-1 cushion with only 17 seconds on the clock. He only surrendered an escape over the final 17 seconds to defeat Liegel by a 4-2 decision.
Key will face Northern Iowa's No. 1 Parker Keckeisen for a spot in the semifinals in session three tomorrow. Key has won nine of his last 10 matches dating back to the regular season. The Norcross, Ga., native has now won four-consecutive matches against ranked wrestlers. He posted just a 2-7 record against ranked foes during the regular season.
Koderhandt began the championship for the Mids against No. 17 CJ Composto of Penn. Each wrestler scored an escape in regulation to send the match into sudden victory tied, 1-1. Koderhandt scored the match-winning takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision.
The Belleville, Ill., native then faced No. 9 Lachlan McNeil of North Carolina in the round of 16. McNeil entered the third period with a 4-1 advantage on the scoreboard. Koderhandt began the final period with an escape and then took his first lead by scoring a takedown with 41 seconds left in the match. McNeil tied the match with an escape 10 seconds later. The match looked to be heading into overtime, but McNeil recorded a takedown with just one second on the clock to win by an 8-5 decision.
Koderhandt will take on Purdue's No. 29 Greyson Clark in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Cerniglia had a great start to his match against Bucknell's No. 18 Noah Mulvaney. He scored three takedowns in the opening period to build a 9-3 lead. Mulvaney responded with an impressive second period, scoring a four-point near fall and preventing Cerniglia from scoring an escape. Mulvaney tied the match in the third period with a reversal. Mulvaney also added to his riding time in the final period to secure the point and win by a 10-9 decision.
Cerniglia responded with an excellent defensive match in the consolation bracket against Minnesota's No. 28 Blaine Brenner. He held Brenner scoreless in the match while scoring a takedown, reversal and securing the riding time point to win by a 6-0 decision.
Cerniglia will see No. 15 Garrett Thompson of Ohio in the second round of the consolation bracket. The Nazareth, Pa., native defeated Thompson earlier this season in a dual by a 7-5 decision.
Ohio State's No. 6 Rocco Welsh scored a pivotal takedown with only eight seconds remaining in the first period against Wask. Welsh would take the match by a 4-2 decision.
Wask kept his season alive with a victory over No. 21 Peyton Mocco of Missouri in the consolation bracket. Wask began the scoring with a takedown in the first period to go up, 3-0. Mocco recorded an escape in the second period, but Wask scored one of his own to start the third. Wask sealed the match with his second takedown with 24 seconds remaining. He also added the riding time point to take the match by an 8-1 decision.
Wask will look to avenge a loss from earlier this year against North Carolina's No. 19 Tyler Eischens. Wask fell in his dual match to Eischens by a 15-12 decision in sudden victory.
The first round concluded with the fourth match of the season between Griess and No. 20 Cory Day. Griess avenged his three losses to Day this season by scoring a takedown in sudden victory to win by a 4-1 decision.
Penn State's No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet defeated Griess in the second round by a 9-1 major decision.
