WILLIAMSBURG, Va. // Team captain
Benjamin Valdez (Jr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.),
Chip Deegan (So / Newport Beach, Calif.) and
Jack Tarzy (So / Medford, N.J.) all finished among to top 15 to lead the Navy men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the 12-team Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate held Monday and Tuesday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club (Gold Course) in Williamsburg, Va. The Mids, who opened the tournament red hot with 4-over par 284, closed out the 54-hole tournament with a 28-over par 880.
Valdez paced the Mids with ninth-place finish, as he posted a 3-over par 216. He opened with a 2-under par 69, but shot a 4-over par 75 in the afternoon round. He closed out the tournament with a 1-over par 72 on Tuesday for his first-career top-10 finish. Deegan, meanwhile, finished the tournament just a stroke back from Valdez in 12th. He shot rounds of 71, 72 and 74 to finish 4-over. Tarzy was 2 strokes behind Valdez and 1 behind Deegan in 14th. The second-year standout had his best round of the tournament in Monday's second round where he was 1-under. He covered the two-day tourney with a 5-over par 218.
Rounding out play for the Mids were
Noah Nuez (Jr / Laveen Ariz.), who placed 44th with a 16-over par 229 (75-79-75), and
Derek Weaver (So / Hackettstown, N.J.), who finished 74th with a 33-over par 246 (80-85-81).
Luke Lombardo (Fr / Severna Park, Md.), who competed as an individual in the tournament, shot a 14-over par 227 (76-76-75) to place 42nd.
Tournament Notes
• Princeton (301-276-280=857) captured the team title by 5 strokes over second-place George Mason (287-292-283=862). The Tigers overcame a rough opening round (301, +17) by shooting under par in the second (276, -8) and final (280, -4) rounds.
• While Princeton had 4 players finish among the top 14, Longwood's Justin Larue claimed individual medalist honors. He was untouchable throughout the tournament, shooting rounds of 68, 67 and 68 to finish the tournament 10-under. Saint Joseph's Christian Matt finished second with a 3-under par 210 (68-70-72).

• Navy will play its final tune-up in preparation for the Patriot League Championship when it travels to Raleigh, N.C. on April 12-13 for the Stitch Intercollegiate hosted by NC State.
