ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had a busy weekend, competing in three regattas on the road and having one sailor pick up all-conference honors.
The third conference championship event of the spring, the MAISA Women's Team Race Championship in St. Mary's City, Md., featured the top eight teams in the Mid-Atlantic. A windy Saturday had two races completed before the wind became too strong to continue and forced a long delay, but the teams eventually got back on the water and completed two more heavy-wind races before the end of the first day, as the Midshipmen closed Saturday with a 2-2 record. Sunday proved to be a great day for sailing, with sunny skies, temperatures in the 70s and a 10-15 knot southerly breeze, as the fleet was very tight throughout the day, with seven of the eight teams within two wins of the lead halfway through the day. In the end, Navy wound up 7-7 overall, tied with Old Dominion for fourth but losing a tiebreaker to finish fifth. Navy's skippers consisted of senior
Aubin Hattendorf, junior
Evie Blauvelt and sophomore
Ava Farley with crews being made up of senior
Catherine Aitken, junior
Maggie Schuler, sophomore Eleanor Neihoff and freshmen
Darby Dryden,
Mary Dwyer and
Josie Sherry, while fellow freshman
Kate Zurinskas was in reserve.
At the conclusion of racing, the All-MAISA Women's Skippers were announced as
Evie Blauvelt was picked up First-Team All-MAISA honors and was selected as a finalist for MASIA Women's Sailor of the Year for the second-straight year.
Navy's first out of conference regatta of the spring, the Thompson Trophy Team Race saw wild conditions on the first day in New London, Conn., as winds from 5-25 knots and strong currents with many capsizes made for challenging racing. Sunday was more manageable but a very deep eight-team field, shifty winds and strong currents put teams to the test, with Navy going 10-9 over three rounds and finished fourth overall. Navy's team consisted of sophomore skippers
Nathan Smith and
Jack Welburn and freshman skipper
Henry Allgeier, while senior
Madeline Smith, junior
Ryan Wahba and sophomores
Ellie Alex and
Darby Graham made up the crews, with junior
Tanner Kelly and freshman
George Carty being in reserve.
In the final event of the weekend, Navy headed to one of the biggest collegiate fleet races of the spring season in the Truxtun Umsted. Traditionally held at the Naval Academy, construction in and around Santee Basin relocated the 2024 regatta to SUNY Maritime in the Bronx, N.Y. Strong winds and currents prevented any racing from happening on Saturday, pushing the entirety of the regatta to Sunday, where Navy came out of the gate strong and held the lead after one race in each division, but a tough time in the second race pushed the Mids back into the pack early on. The team later found its footing and rattled off a string of solid races to move into second halfway through the day, while a few rough races at the end dropped Navy to third overall out of 14 teams. Senior
Trenton Shaw and freshman
Fiona Cullen finished second in the "A" division and freshmen
Teddy Martin and
Eva Ottenbreit were fourth in the "B" division, while sophomore
Alex Brenia and freshman
Logan Hayes were in reserve.
Navy is back in action April 20-21 at the America Trophy (MAISA Coed Championship) and the George Washington Invitational.
