Intercollegiate Sailing Finishes Third at America Trophy; Eight Mids Named All-MAISA

Navy Captain Madeline Smith Earns MAISA Crew of the Year Award

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team finished off the regular season this weekend with a pair of road regattas, finishing up its conference championship slate in the Bronx, N.Y., while also sending sailors to the nation's capital.

Competing for the America Trophy at the MAISA Open Fleet Racing Championship, the Midshipmen headed to SUNY Maritime in the Bronx as part of a fleet that featured the top 18 teams in the conference. Puffy and shifty winds combined with strong currents to make for a very challenging weekend of racing, as conditions delayed Saturday's start until the afternoon, allowing six races to be completed on the first day. Navy got off to a strong start and held a tight overall lead going into Sunday, but Sunday was a tough day and the Midshipmen were up and down in the standings. After 15 races per division, Navy wound up third overall, as sophomore Nathan Smith, junior Ryan Wahba and sophomore Darby Graham finished third in the "A" division while junior Evie Blauvelt, sophomore Jack Welburn, freshman Henry Allgeier, seniors Madeline Smith and Hunter Anderson and sophomore Ellie Alex were also third in the "B" division.

Following the final conference championship, All-MAISA honors were presented and saw the Mids earn eight all-conference nods and a major award winner.

With Madeline Smith taking home MAISA Crew of the Year and Blauvelt being a finalist for Women's Skipper of the Year, Navy had Alex, Wahba and Madeline Smith all take home First-Team All-MAISA Crew distinction while Blauvelt was a First-Team Women's Skipper. Additionally, Welburn and Nathan Smith garnered All-MAISA Open Skipper First Team accolades and Allgeier was selected to the Open Skipper Second Team.

Navy's other competition was the George Washington Invitational that was held on Saturday in Washington, D.C., as the Mids fielded two teams in the eight-team, combined-division event. Finishing third and fourth overall, freshmen Spencer Dominguez and Josie Sherry finished fourth, junior Izzy Fadullon and sophomore Alex Brenia were sixth, sophomore Margo Cicero and freshman Eva Ottenbreit took seventh and rookies Logan Hayes and Fiona Cullen came in 10th.

Up next for Navy is its national championship slate, as the ICSA Team Race Championship kicks off Thursday through Saturday in Boston, Mass., with the ICSA Women's Team Race Championship following that on Sunday and Monday.
