ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Rising senior
Josh Koderhandt (141) has been selected as the captain of the 2024-25 Navy wrestling team, head coach
Cary Kolat announced Tuesday.
Â
Koderhandt won the 110th individual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) title in program history this past season. He won two matches by fall and outscored his additional two opponents, 17-2.
Â
With his placement in the tournament, Koderhandt earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship for the third-consecutive season. He posted a 3-2 record at nationals with wins over Penn's No. 17 CJ Composto (4-1), Purdue's No. 29 Greyson Clark (6-0) and Arizona State's No. 15 Jesse Vasquez (9-5).
Â
The Belleville, Ill., native compiled an overall record of 25-8 and led the Mids with 12 dual victories in 2023-24. He became the first Navy wrestler to win 12 dual matches in a season since Casey Caldwell and Bryce Saddoris, who won 14 and 12, respectively, during the 2008-09 campaign. Additionally, Koderhandt led the team with a career-high 10 wins over ranked wrestlers. His top victory was a 5-2 decision over Pitt's No. 7 Cole Matthews, which helped the Mids beat the Panthers in the dual, 21-12.
Â
Koderhandt will enter his senior season with a career record of 79-29. He is seeking to become the 17th wrestler in school history to reach 100 wins and the first since Nicholas Gil, who won his 100th match in 2019. Additionally, Koderhandt will look to become just the ninth four-time NCAA qualifier in team history.
Â
"Josh (Koderhandt) is a great pick for captain leading us into the 2024-25 season," said Kolat. "I know he has high goals for himself as well as the team and will do what needs to be done to improve our program."
