ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's soccer team extended its run of undefeated play at home in 2024 with an 8-0 decision over Wilson College on Tuesday night. The Mids' (3-2) depth was on display versus the Phoenix as 20 different Mids played and 11 collected at least one point.
Isabella Romano (Jr., Syosset, N.Y.),
Lucy Gaines (So., Seattle, Wash.) and
Lizzie Emerson (Fr., Houston, Texas) led the way as all three all scored two goals at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
In addition to the six goals scored by the above trio,
Amanda Graziano (Sr., Middlebury, Conn.) and
Kayana Adlam (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) found the back of the net, while
Mori Sokoloff (Jr., Arnold, Md.) and
Emma Romano (Jr., Syosset, N.Y.) each registered career-highs with two assists each. The Mids' goalkeeper union was strong versus the Phoenix as
Natasha Stramrood (Fr., Cypress, Texas),
Talley Applewhite (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) and
Cadence Tordai (So., San Diego, Calif.) combined for the team shutout.
"It was great to get a shutout at home and have a lot of players get game experience tonight," remarked head coach
Carin Gabarra. "We had three players score their first career goals, Lizzie, Lucy and Kayana. It was great to see so many different players get into rhythm and find success out there.
"We've been working on our possession in training. It was much better tonight. I felt that we were moving the ball and making better reads. We did a good job of getting behind them a bit more in the second half and that paid off of us."
The action between Navy and Wilson opening evenly and a bit methodical as it was scoreless through 20 minutes. The Phoenix, who compete at the Division III level and officially begin their season on Friday, received a pair of saves from their goalkeeper Rebecca Marakovitz during this span. The Mids finally broke through in quick succession as
Isabella Romano benefited from a pair of in-swinging crosses in the 25th and 27th minute as Gaines found her off the left wing initially at 24:07 before Emerson worked the ball in from the right wing for her second goal at 26:56.
The score stayed static at 2-0 over the remaining 18-plus minutes as the teams retired to the locker room separated by that same margin.
Navy started separating itself from Wilson in the second half as the senior connection of
Emma Frommelt (Sr., Edina, Minn.) to Graziano paid dividends at 55:33 when Frommelt dribbled through the middle of the field and slotted a crisp pass to Graziano, who drove her shot into the lower corner of the goal for her second score of the 2024 campaign.
Emerson netted her first career collegiate goal just over 16 minutes later at 71:36 when she deflected in a
Chiara Cosenza (So., Westfield, N.J.) free kick that rang off the cross bar and bounced right into her at the mouth of the goal.
A crossbar shot by Gaines in the 78th minute nearly made it 5-0, though the ball ricocheted back into the field of play. The sophomore defender redeemed herself four minutes later when she received a short corner kick by
Emma Romano and immediately cracked a low, long shot through a crowded 18-yard box that had eyes for the far corner of the goal. Her goal at 81:13 was the first of her career at Navy.
With the score 5-0, the final seven minutes of regulation finished in chaotic fashion as the Mids rattled off three unanswered goals. Adlam led the late scoring barrage at 83:41 when Sokoloff found her in space with a lead pass that she sprinted onto and just flicked past the Phoenix' goalkeeper, who crashed into her. The duo of Adlam and Sokoloff set up the next goal as they played a square ball to each other and fed Emerson for a low shot that blistered into the back of the net at 88:31. The last goal of Tuesday night came at 89:23 when
Emma Romano and Gaines connected on another short corner kick layoff and deep shot on goal.
For the game, Navy out-shot Wilson, 38-1 with 13 shots on goal. The Mids recorded all 14 corner kicks taken on Tuesday night.
"Our goal tonight was to score goals, win both halves and to keep them off the scoreboard," said Gabarra in closing. "I'm happy with that result and a lot of players' performances. I'm also extremely proud of
Emma Frommelt's effort. She started the game with the captain's arm band. She was out there for all 90 minutes and led the way for us. She won every defensive play that she was involved in and played an important role and turning the ball up field with our attack."
Navy will be right back in action on Thursday night when it welcomes intrastate rival Maryland to the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Kickoff between the Mids and Terps is set for 7 p.m.
