HAMILTON, N.Y. --
Farrah Eike recorded a career-best 12 kills for the Navy volleyball team in a three-set loss (25-20, 25-19, 25-15) to Colgate, Saturday evening at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, N.Y.
"It is never an easy turnaround to play one day after the Star Match, but it certainly was tougher coming against a very physical and technically solid Colgate team," said Navy head coach
Paco Labrador. "We played some scrappy defense and saw some great swings out of our really young lineup."
Set One
The teams were tied at 8-8 when Colgate opened up a 15-10 lead. Back came Navy and soon it was a 15-14 score. The teams traded the next nine points before Colgate scored on its serve to take a 21-18 lead. The Raiders scored the next point as well (22-18) and would lead by at least three points over the rest of the frame.
Set Two
The score was knotted at 11-11 until a quick 3-0 run gave the Raiders a 14-11 advantage. Navy drew to within two points at both 14-12 and 15-13 when Colgate used another 3-0 run to take an 18-13 advantage. That provided enough of a cushion for Colgate to close out the set.
Set Three
Colgate used a 7-0 run to a 9-2 lead at the start of the frame and was able to keep a lead throughout the set.
Inside the Numbers
Colgate led Navy in offensive statistics –– 44-32 in kills, .308-.112 in hitting percentage –– with the rest of the numbers being fairly even. The Raiders held slim leads of 6-4 in aces and 5-4 in blocks and the Mids led, 39-37, in digs.
Eike had tallied a career-high nine kills –– all coming in the last three sets –– Friday at Army before bettering that effort today. Her 12 kills today tied her with Colgate's Libby Overmyer for the most by a player in the match.
"Farrah has put together back-to-back nights of solid hitting from the left side as well as passing well and playing great defense," said Labrador.
One day after grabbing a career-best 19 digs in a five-set match at Army,
Ally Alessio snared 14 digs this evening. She started at libero for
Hannah Hoover, who was injured early in the match at West Point. This ended her run of Hoover being Navy's starting libero at 66 matches.
