ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's rugby (2-0) team scored early and often, highlighted by
Marek Enters career-best three-try performance, the Mids roll through Maryland (0-1), 62-14 on Friday evening.
"We saw some really good work from a lot of guys today, there was multiple guys who played their first game in a Navy uniform so that's exciting to see," said director of rugby
Gavin Hickie. "Guys like
John Masino stood out;
Marek Enters played very well. We were looking at a bunch of different combinations on the pitch that went pretty well. Still have a lot to work on, I think we were poor tactically in the second half in executing. But the score being 62-14, you can't have too many complaints."
Navy opened the match explosive scoring six tries in the first 30 minutes with four different Midshipmen striking the ball in the try zone. Senior
Tanner Russell scored a pair of tries, Russell found the endzone first for Navy at the seven-minute mark. His second try would come off a Maryland turnover inside its own 22-meter zone, the Mids took advantaged and executed a pick and go play to land Russell his second try of the match.
A trio of Mids scored their first collegiate in the first half, freshmen
Waylon Davis,
Max Cornelius and sophomore
Chase Dixon. Davis showed off his power running ability refusing to be taken down in the attacking 22-meter zone as he shook off five Terps for his first collegiate try. Cornelius also got into the try zone in his debut, Navy took advantage of a Maryland knock-on penalty inside the attacking zone. Mids efficient passing kept the offense attack to the Terps 5-meter zone, where a pass to Cornelius opened him up to the goal line. Dixon, made his second career start for Navy, a Masino located Dixon for a pass and went untouched for the five points.
Maryland registered its first try at the 32:50 mark in the first half, a Terps scrum victory left a flanker with open field for the solo run to make the score, 31-7, after the conversion kick.
The Mids needed four minutes to return the favor as Enters scored his one of three tries to extend Navy's lead, 38-7.
AJ Young made his presence known coming off the bench as he registered a try right before halftime in the 40th minute mark.
In the second half, it was Enters who led the attack scoring a pair of tries in the 46th and 72nd minute marks. With his hat trick, he became the first player to accomplish the feat since fellow Midshipmen
Roanin Krieger scored three tries against Notre Dame College last fall season.
"Marek [Enters] just finds a way to always stay on his feet, he's very hard to get down. Every time you think you have him, he seems to pop up and keep going. He did a very nice job today," remarked Hickie.
Sophomore Eric Wrzyszczyski made his Navy debut and scored his first career try running half the length of the field.
