BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior team captain Josh Koderhandt was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Wrestler of the Week for his 4-0 performance at the Soldier Salute last weekend.
Koderhandt won the 141-pound title at the Soldier Salute. His championship run also garnered him the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the tournament. After drawing a bye in the opening round, Koderhandt began his day in the round of eight where he met Northern Iowa's Carter Freeman. Koderhandt held a 4-0 lead before ending the match in the second period pinning Freeman. In the quarterfinals, Koderhandt was in a low scoring match against Iowa's Cullan Schriever. Koderhandt went into the third period with a slim 1-0 lead where he controlled the round but Freeman escaped Josh's grasp to send the bout into sudden victory. The Belleville, Ill., native secured his ticket to the semifinals with a takedown in the final minute.
Koderhandt continued his dominance on the second day of the tournament by scoring his fourth fall of the season in the semifinals over South Dakota State's Julian Tagg. In the finals, Koderhandt met No. 7 Vance Vombaur where he earned his second ranked victory this season in a low scoring match, 4-2. It was Koderhandt's first tournament title this season.
The Mids will open the new calendar year at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday, Jan. 10 in Lancaster, Pa. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
