Sprint Football Shuts Out Molloy, 63-0

The Midshipmen outgained the Lions, 574 to 57, in total offense.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (5-0) posted a 63-0 shutout over Molloy (1-5) on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The Midshipmen tallied 574 yards of total offense, while holding the Lions to just 57 total yards.

"We did what we needed to do tonight," head coach Major Carter Reading, USMC said after the game. "We got a lot of players into the game and everyone contributed in their own way. That being said, there are still plenty of things that we can improve on as we did not play a complete game tonight. We will celebrate this win tonight and then get back to work preparing for Penn."

Offensively, the Midshipmen tallied 574 yards of total offense on 57 total plays for an average of 10.1 yards per play. The Mids rushed for 449 yards, while adding 125 yards through the air.

Hunter Gennicks led the rushing attack, finishing with 174 yards on 14 carries with three touchdowns. He was followed by Broderick Freeman who notched 145 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Wyatt Keyt finished with 54 yards, while Simmarion Threet and Rhett Sypult notched 51 and 26 yards, respectively. Threet and Sypult also added rushing TDs.

Luke O'Connell led the passing attack, finishing 8-for-12 for 115 yards and a touchdown. Sypult added a 10-yard touchdown pass. Jake Berger led the team with 36 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Ibi Denson and Biamungu Nkere added 33 and 29, correspondingly. Grant Sterchi added a reception for 17 yards, while Jon Malatesta made his one catch count – a 10-yard TD grab.

Defensively, the Mids held Molloy to just 57 yards on 57 plays for one yard per play. Navy had nine tackles for loss, including a sack. Drake Murrell led the team with four tackles for loss, while Booran Dhaba added a pair of TFLs, including a sack. Lex Willson and Gabriel Arriola forced fumbles, while Christian Conley recovered a fumble for 17 yards and a touchdown.

Navy got the scoring started early. The Midshipmen forced a punt on the Lions' first drive. The snap went over the punter's head and Conley scooped up the loose ball, returning it 17 yards for a touchdown just three and a half minutes into the game. On the Mids' first drive, Berger caught a 15-yard TD pass from O'Connell to cap a four-play, 66-yard drive to put Navy up 14-0 with just under eight minutes to play in the first quarter. The Mids concluded the first period with another score as Gennicks scored his first touchdown of the game, plowing into the end zone from 10-yards out to put the home team in front, 21-0.

In the second quarter, the Midshipmen drove down the field 80 yards on just three plays as Gennicks broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run to go up, 28-0.

The score remained 28-0 until the third quarter when Gennicks ran untouched into the end zone from seven yards out to push the advantage to 35-0. Freeman was able to find the checkerboard end zone in the third quarter, using a 25-yard touchdown run to close out a four-play, 87-yard drive. The PAT was no good, but Navy would add two points to its total later in the quarter as Molloy, punting out of its own end zone, sent the snap sailing over the punter's head and out the back of the end zone for a safety.

Navy found the end zone three times in the fourth quarter. Malatesta caught a 10-yard TD pass from Sypult to start the final period. Sypult called his own number later in the quarter, rushing around the edge for eight yards and a score. The Midshipmen concluded the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown run by Threet, providing the final margin of 63-0.

Up next, Navy travels to the City of Brotherly Love to take on Penn on Saturday, Nov. 1 at historic Franklin Field. The game will be live streamed on the ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
