ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Battling the best players in the conference, the Navy women's tennis team wrapped up its stay at the ITA Conference Masters' Patriot League Qualifier on Saturday at Lehigh's Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts and Lewis Indoor Tennis Center in Bethlehem, Pa.
After opening the qualifying tournament on Friday with sophomores
Molly Bellia and
Emma Gu notching wins in the singles round-of-16 and the pairing of junior
Olivia Fermo and freshman
Nicole Fu advancing through the doubles quarterfinals, all four Midshipmen saw their runs end Saturday afternoon when Bellia and Gu fell in the singles' quarterfinal round while the Fermo-Fu duo suffered defeat in the doubles semifinals.
For Bellia, she kicked off the event with the 6-2, 6-2 win over Colgate's Amelia Galin on Friday, but then was beat by the No. 1 seed, Jiayi Liu of Boston University, in a 6-4, 6-3 quarterfinal decision.
Gu also picked up a round-of-16 win on Friday, beating out Lafayette's Hanna Ganchi by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 score, but then fell in the quarterfinals to third-seeded Vennmukiil Mathivanan of Army in a 6-0, 6-4 battle.
In the doubles bracket, Fermo and Fu grabbed an 8-7 (3) victory in the quarterfinals against the Bucknell pair of Abigail Platt and Riley Jennings, but were knocked off by the second-seeded Army pairing of Isabella Brilliant and Madison Smith, 8-3.
