Navy competed in the WrangleMania portion of the Journeymen Collegiate Classic last weekend where it faced Appalachian State and No. 14 Rutgers.

The Mids earned their first win of the season when they knocked off Appalachian State 27-13 closing out the dual strong by winning four of the final five matches.

Navy dropped a 24-12 decision to Rutgers in the second dual. The highlight came when team captain Kaemen Smith earned an upset win over 11th-ranked Andy Clark, 21-5, to earn his second-career victory against a ranked opponent.

The Mids wrapped up the weekend at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, which featured no team scoring or placement winners. Eleven Midshipmen finished the round-robin event with winning records.

Brendan Ferretti (133 pounds) was the only Navy wrestler to go unbeaten as he finished 3-0 with wins over Appalachian State's Jarvis Little (5-2), Columbia's Boris Witmer (6-1) and awarded a win by forfeit over Anthony Clem from Sacred Heart.

Early Season Tests

Navy Notes
  • The win over Appalachian State marked the 70th-career victory for head coach Cary Kolat.
  • Saturday's dual will be Navy's second matchup this season against an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent. The Mids opened the year (Nov. 1) with a 20-12 loss to No. 21 Pittsburgh in Annapolis.
  • Navy holds an 130-48-3 all-time record against ACC opponents.
  • Danny Wask (174 pounds) recorded Navy's first bonus-point victory of the season last week when he pinned Appalachian State's Colt Campbell in the first period (1:58).
  • Payton Thomas (197) and Spencer Lanosga (285) also posted pins in the win over the Mountaineers. It was Thomas' second-career pin and Lanosga's first.
  • Thomas has faced tough competition to start the year, with four of his seven matches coming against ranked opponents. He earned his first ranked win of the season last Sunday by major decision (14-3) over 14th-ranked Jack Wehmeyer of Columbia.
  • Lanosga and Wask are tied for the team lead with three wins over ranked opponents.
  • Thomas, Lanosga and Wask are projected to face ranked opponents again this weekend against North Carolina.
  • Lanosga leads the team with six wins and is the only Midshipman this season to record victories by decision, major decision, technical fall and pin.
  • Caedyn Ricciardi (141) is off to a fast start with a 5-2 record, including a 2-2 mark against ranked opponents. In his last outing against Rutgers, Ricciardi pushed two-time NCAA qualifier Joseph Olivieri to a second tiebreaker before losing 7-5.
  • Ricciardi enters the week ranked 31st at 141 pounds by InterMat. He is one of two true freshmen ranked in his weight class, joining Oklahoma State's Sergio Vega (20th).
