ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman
Spencer Lanosga captured the 285-pound title to lead the Navy wrestling team (0-1) to a third-place finish at the 47th annual Navy Classic on Sunday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. Lanosga became the 10th freshman in program history to win an individual Navy Classic title, joining teammate
Danny Wask who last accomplished the feat in 2023.
Â
Nebraska won the team title for the fourth-straight season with 144 points and had five individual champions, outpacing Pittsburgh who finished second with 126 points and one champion. Navy totaled 93.5 points and had one champion to take third place ahead of Virginia who scored 75.5 points and had one champion.
Â
"We definitely have to get our depth," said Navy head coach
Cary Kolat. "We have some guys we see as starters down the road, but our guys in those two or three spots have to get their attack up and come to wrestle. We've got to get our depth right. The guys who performed well — Spencer [Lanosga], Danny [Wask], Caedyn [Ricciardi] and Kaemen [Smith] — all looked solid today. I think Smith jumped levels after last night's loss, and Ricciardi and Lanosga beating two guys from the same team two days in a row, I tell people that's like winning four matches."
Â
Lanosga opened the day with a technical fall over Binghamton's Trent Sibble (17-2) before a major decision over American's Emmanuel Ulrich (14-2) in the semifinals set up a rematch between the Navy rookie and seventh-ranked Dayton Pitzer of Pittsburgh in the championship bout. On the heels of defeating Pitzer by a 5-0 decision in his collegiate debut on Saturday afternoon, Lanosga claimed the heavyweight title thanks to a 6-4 decision.
Â
Wask, who came into the Navy Classic having won individual titles in his first two seasons, advanced to the 174-pound finals with a pair of decisive wins, including an 8-0 major decision over 28th-ranked Jasiah Queen of Drexel. Wask, however, dropped an 11-3 major decision to fourth-ranked Christopher Minto of Nebraska in the title bout to place second.
Â
"Wask is always a solid performer," remarked Kolat. "He had a setback today. I think he jumped the gun trying to play catchup and came out of his elements and positions."
Â
Two Midshipmen placed at 197 pounds as
Payton Thomas and
Zyan Hall finished third and fourth, respectively. Thomas opened with a dominant 8-1 decision over Drexel's Justin Griffith and later defeated Hall by disqualification in the third-place match. Meanwhile, Hall earned wins over Drexel's Ibrahim Ameer (8-3) and Virginia's Max Shulaw (9-3) to reach the semifinals where he fell to fifth-ranked Mac Stout from Pittsburgh, 5-1.
Â
Ricciardi took third at 141 pounds after earning a hard-fought 4-3 victory over 32nd-ranked Briar Priest of Pittsburgh in the consolation final. Ricciardi defeated Priest in Saturday's dual, 10-3. Â Ricciardi's only loss of the tournament was against second-ranked Brock Hardy from Nebraska in the semifinals (16-7).
Â
Two Mids placed at 157 pounds led by
Jonathan Ley who finished fifth. Ley won four matches including an 11-2 major decision against American's Kaden Milheim and a 4-1 sudden victory over Bucknell's Cade Wirnsberger in the consolations. Navy's
Cooper Rathburn followed in sixth with three wins, including a 4-1 sudden victory over Fin Nadeau of Binghamton before forfeiting to Ley in the fifth-place bout.
Â
Davis Park placed sixth at 165 pounds with three wins, including an 11-9 decision over Binghamton's Tyler Reed.
Â
Kaemen Smith, who placed fourth at 149 pounds dropped a tough match to Eugene Harney of Morgan State in sudden victory (8-5) in the semifinals and a 4-2 decision to 17th-ranked Kade Brown of Pittsburgh in the third-place bout.
Frank Antonelli took sixth at 149 with three wins in the wrestlebacks, including a 12-5 decision over Nebraska's Nikade Zinkin to advance to the fifth-place match.
Â
Rounding out Navy's place winners was
Gage Yackee who finished sixth at 184 pounds, winning three-straight matches in the consolations with two major decisions against Jack Kelly from George Mason (19-7) and Virginia's Jack Lesher (13-5).
