Navy Meets Appalachian State and No. 14 Rutgers at Journeymen Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team (0-1) travels to Bethlehem, Pa., on Saturday to face Appalachian State (0-0) and 14th-ranked Rutgers (3-0) in the WrangleMania portion of the Journeymen Classic at Liberty High School. The Midshipmen continue the weekend on Sunday at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at Freedom High School.
 
Both duals will stream on FloWrestling, a subscription-based service that requires a monthly or yearly plan. Live results for this weekend events will be available on FloArena.

Last Time Out: No. 21 Pitt / Navy Classic
  • Navy opened its season last weekend when it played host to 21st-ranked Pittsburgh and the 47th Navy Classic.
  • The Mids dropped their dual to the Panthers, 20-12, but earned four wins including three over ranked opponents. Lanosga highlighted the match with a victory over seventh-ranked Dayton Pitzer.
  • Navy placed third out of 10 teams at the Navy Classic, led by Lanosga's heavyweight title. He became the 10th freshman in program history to win an individual Navy Classic crown.
  • Ten other Mids finished in the top six at the Navy Classic: Ricciardi (141, 3rd), Kaemen Smith (149, 4th), Frank Antonelli (149, 6th), Jonathan Ley (157, 5th), Cooper Rathburn (157, 6th), Davis Park (165, 6th), Wask (174, 2nd), Gage Yackee (184, 6th), Thomas (197, 3rd) and Zyan Hall (197, 4th).
 
Freshmen Contributing Early
  • Three freshmen — Binni, Ricciardi and Lanosga — broke into the starting lineup against Pittsburgh and each came away with a win last Saturday.
  • Ricciardi and Lanosga carried that momentum into the Navy Classic, while Yackee went 2-2 and placed sixth in his collegiate debut with both victories coming by major decision.
 
Navy Notes
  • Nine projected starters this weekend are freshmen or sophomores.
  • Seven freshmen are expected to make their tournament debut this Sunday.
  • Lanosga jumped 17 spots in the national heavyweight rankings to 12th after two statement wins over Pitzer.
  • He is the first freshman heavyweight in program history to win a Navy Classic title.
  • Wask's 6-5 win over 15th-ranked Luca Augustine marked his first-career season-opening dual victory. He also picked up his 50th-career win the next day at the Navy Classic with an 8-0 major decision over 28th-ranked Jasiah Queen of Drexel.
  • A freshman is projected to start at 184 pounds with either Yackee or Jameson Maynard.
  • Ricciardi led the team with three takedowns in the dual against Pitt while no other Navy wrestler had more than one.

Scouting Appalachian State
  • Saturday marks the first dual of the season for Appalachian State.  
  • App State enters the weekend with two ranked wrestlers in 32nd-ranked Tomas Brooker (197) and 33rd-ranked Kaden Keiser (149).
  • The Mountaineers had seven top-six finishers at the Southeast Open last weekend, led by Jeremiah Price (157) who placed second.
  • Appalachian State finished last season 8-4, extending its streak to 14-consecutive winning seasons and sent three wrestlers to the 2025 NCAA Championship where it finished 48th.
  • The Mountaineers lost two NCAA qualifiers from last year, but return sophomore Stephan Monchery (285). The Mountaineers have won three-straight Southern Conference titles and placed among the top two in 12 of the last 14 seasons.
 
Navy vs. Appalachian State
  • Navy leads the all-time series 3-0 with all meetings at neutral sites. The programs last met in 1990. The first matchup came Jan. 2, 1983, when Navy earned a 34-0 shutout in Orlando, Fla.

Scouting No. 14 Rutgers
  • Rutgers ranks 14th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Coaches Poll after sweeping the RU Quad last weekend with wins over Centenary (44-0), Gardner-Webb (37-5) and Bloomsburg (38-2).
  • The Scarlet Knights finished 14-5 last season and 5-3 in the Big Ten, highlighted by a 16-15 win over 10th-ranked Illinois.
  • Rutgers placed ninth at the Big Ten Championship and sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championship.
  • Four NCAA qualifiers return: Dylan Shawver (133), Joseph Olivieri (141), Andrew Clark (149) and Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184).
  • Shawver, a 2024 All-American, and Olivieri both fell one win short of All-America honors last season.
  • Rutgers has nine ranked wrestlers in its projected lineup, led by Shawver and Lenny Pinto (174) who are both ranked seventh in their respective weight classes.
  • Head coach Scott Goodale enters his 19th season with a 238-101-1 record and has produced 19 All-Americans, including 2019 National Champions Nick Suriano (133) and Anthony Ashnault (149).
 
Navy vs. Rutgers
  • Saturday marks the 29th meeting between the programs as Navy leads the all-time series 21-7.
  • The teams last met in 2015 when Rutgers edged Navy 20-15 in Piscataway, N.J.
  • It will be the second meeting since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014 after leaving the EIWA.
 
Journeymen Collegiate Classic Notes
  • Navy is one of 21 teams competing Sunday. The field includes four nationally-ranked programs: Lehigh (8th), Northern Iowa (13th), Rutgers (14th) and Army (23rd).
  • Eight EIWA teams will compete in the tournament: Army, Binghamton, Franklin & Marshall, Hofstra, Lehigh, Long Island, Navy and Sacred Heart.
