BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Navy wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday at the Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pa., as 11 Midshipmen finished the round-robin event with winning records. The tournament had no team scoring or placement winners.
 
"We wanted to get more of our athletes valuable mat time to sharpen their technique and build quality competition minutes," said Navy head coach Cary Kolat. "I thought out non-regular lineup guys looked strong today. We saw some young athletes step up and compete well. Overall, the goal was to use this competition as part of our training process and it proved to be a great event for us."
 
Jack Bergmann and Leo Joseph each finished 2-1 in their respective pools at 125 pounds. Bergmann capped his day with an 11-2 major decision over Virginia's Anthony Rossi, while Joseph recorded wins over Army's Luke Sirianni (8-1) and Sacred Heart's Caden Smith (17-2 technical fall).
 
Navy received two more winning marks at 133 pounds as Brendan Ferretti and Hunter Heflin each went 2-1. Ferretti earned decisions over Appalachian State's Jarvis Little (5-2) and Columbia's Boris Witmer (6-1), while Heflin posted a 24-3 technical fall against Chris Betancourt from Long Island (unattached) and edged Duke's John King, 5-4.
 
Nicholas Vafiadis finished 2-1 at 141 pounds as he opened with an 11-1 major decision over Maryland's Clayton Gabrielson and pinned Sacred Heart's Josias Daniels in 2:23.
 
Frank Antonelli (149 pounds) tallied a 2-1 record with a 10-2 major decision over Army's Cole Stone and a 17-2 technical fall against Hofstra's Cam Ice.
 
Three Mids finished with winning records at 157 pounds. Charlie Evans went 2-1 after earning wins over Binghamton's Gavin Nolan (9-7) and Army's Oscar Aranda (8-0 major). Cooper Rathburn bounced back from two early losses to finish 2-2, defeating Hofstra's Dylan Zenion and Matt Rogers by identical 5-0 scores.
 
At 165 pounds, Dylan Elmore turned in one of the team's most impressive performances, going 2-1 and earning a first-period pin (0:42) over 23rd-ranked Cesar Alvan of Columbia. Mason Collins also went 2-2, closing with a 15-0 technical fall over Sacred Heart's Owen Anderson.
 
The Mids continued their success in the upper weights as Jonathan Sanchez and Gage Yackee each finished 2-1 at 184 pounds. Sanchez collected a pair of major decisions, while Yackee posted a technical fall and a 10-3 decision.
 
Zyan Hall posted an impressive outing at 197 pounds as he went 2-1 with key wins over Virginia's Steven Burrell (7-6) and 14th-ranked Jack Wehmeyer of Columbia (7-3).
