ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team (2-3, 1-0 EIWA) won four bouts by fall and three by technical fall en route to a 47-3 victory over Morgan State (0-7, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon in its Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association opener at Alumni Hall. The 47 points were the most scored by the Midshipmen in a dual since a 46-0 win over Bloomsburg last season and the second most since a 49-0 victory against Delaware Valley in 2017.
Â
"It was good to go out there and perform the way we did," Navy head coach
Cary Kolat said. "This is that time of year when guys are coming off finals and Christmas break and we wanted to keep everyone sharp. Conference bouts are always important, but every match matters this time of year. We spent the last week and a half working on turning wrestlers and it was good to see that work executed today."
Â
The Midshipmen jumped out early at 174 pounds as eighth-ranked
Danny Wask pinned Kyle Grey less than two minutes into the match (1:26). Wask scored a takedown 30 seconds in and finished the bout quickly for his career-best third fall of the season.
Â
Navy extended its lead to 12-0 when 184-pound
Gage Yackee won by forfeit.
Â
Zyan Hall kept the momentum going at 197 pounds with an 18-2 technical fall over Eric Washington in the second period. Hall opened with an early takedown, added a four-point near fall and controlled the bout with more than two minutes of riding time. He secured his first tech fall of the season and pushed the dual score to 17-0.
Â
Heavyweight action followed with 16th-ranked
Spencer Lanosga recording a fall over Eli Turpin at 1:07. Lanosga scored an early takedown and quickly put the match away to give Navy a 23-0 advantage.
Â
At 125 pounds,
Andrew Binni dominated Julian Dawson in a 23-3 technical fall. Binni scored three takedowns in the first period, built nearly four minutes of riding time, added late takedowns and a four-point near fall for his third dual victory this season.
Â
Brendan Ferretti made it six-straight wins of the match for Navy with a first-period pin over 133-pound Javaan Yabrough in 52 seconds. Ferretti escaped an early takedown and finished the bout with a body-lock slam for the fall.
Â
At 141 pounds, 28th-ranked
Caedyn Ricciardi continued the run with a fall over Marwan Nazeer at 1:40. Ricciardi scored a takedown 26 seconds into the match and quickly turned it into six more team points as Navy went up 39-0.
Â
Morgan State got on the board at 149 pounds as 31st-ranked Eugene Harney defeated
James Latona 7-3. Latona made his first start in two years and led early, but Harney used a late takedown and riding time to earn the decision.
Â
Navy responded at 157 pounds when
Jonathan Ley edged Yannis Charles, 7-5. Ley rallied from an early 3-2 deficit as he scored a second-period takedown. He then rode out Charles the whole third period to earn his first dual victory of the season.
