ANNAPOLIS, Md. –  The Navy track and field teams played host to the Navy Select on Friday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in the program's final competition before next week's the Patriot League Indoor Championship.
"There were a lot of event wins today, which is important. A lot of season-best times and we saw a ton of kids trying new events. We rested some people for next week, but we had athletes that performed well across the board. It was fun to see them have fun," remarked Director of Track and Field
Jamie Cook. "Next week is going to be a good atmosphere. We need to make sure that we're rested and ready to go for the conference meet. I'm hoping to see a ton of fans pack the stands here to support our Midshipmen."
Senior Carson Sloat led the day on the men's side as he set a school record in the 1,000m with a time of 2:22.41. Luke Nester followed 11-hundreths of a second behind Sloat to set the second-fastest 1,000m time in program history of 2:22.52.
Both runners bettered the record of 2:22.58 set by Ashwin Briggs back in 2021.
"I'm not shocked or surprise by Carson [Sloat] and Luke [Nester]. It's great to see them write their names in the record book," said Cook. "I know coach [Aaron] Lanzel trains those guys well and they are always prepared to run fast. They did a great job at setting the tone on the back end of the meet."
On the women's side
Alex Wercinski continued the Mids big day in the 1,000m as she clocked a time of 2:47.87 to take first. It was the second-fastest time in program history and 36-hundreths of a second shy from tying the program record.
