Baseball Welcomes Manhattan for 2025 Home Opener

Navy Hosts Jaspers in First Home Game of the Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The friendly confines of Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium await the Navy baseball team (1-5) on Tuesday afternoon, as the Midshipmen get set to host Manhattan (1-6) in their 2025 home opener with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
 
The first of 31 home contests, 2025 home opener will be will be streamed on the Navy Athletics YouTube channel and heard live on WNAV radio (1430 AM / 99.9 FM) with Scott Wykoff calling the action.
 
Back at Bishop
Navy will begin its 103rd season playing at the ballpark now known as Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium, with the Mids beginning play at then-Lawrence Field in 1923 … Tuesday marks the first game on a newly-installed FieldTurf playing surface, as renovations to the field were completed last month.
 
Coaching Connections
Navy will see some familiar faces in the opposing dugout, as multiple Manhattan coaches have served with members of the Mids' coaching staff … Jaspers head coach Steve Rosen worked with both current Navy head coach Chuck Ristano and current Navy assistant Adam Pavkovich at Notre Dame for the 2019 season, as Ristano and Pavkovich were assistant coaches while Rosen served as the Irish's director of baseball operations … Pavkovich had also previously worked with Rosen for two seasons at Georgia State, with both serving as assistants … Manhattan assistant Scott Wingo also worked at Notre Dame alongside Ristano, with both being assistant coaches during the 2020 and 2021 campaigns for the Irish … Rosen and Jaspers assistant coach Steve Englert also have another Navy connection, as the duo coached the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2022 under CCBL Executive of the Year and Navy Assistant AD Alex Lumb.
 
Grenn and DePerno Earn Weekly Patriot League Honors
Navy picked up a pair of weekly honors on Monday afternoon, as junior right-hander Tyler Grenn was named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and freshman catcher Ty DePerno was awarded the league's Rookie of the Week … Grenn was dominant for the second-straight weekend, generating five strikeouts over six innings while limiting the rival Falcons to one run on three hits and two walks … Backstopping Grenn's quality start on Saturday and then coming back to catch Sunday, DePerno also got it done at the plate by going 3-for-8 (.375) while collecting a run and an RBI … This marks Grenn's fourth career Patriot League Pitcher-of-the-Week award, while DePerno's rookie distinction is his first from the league.

Navy in Home Openers
The Mids are 7-3 in their last 10 home openers, including winning five-straight home openers from 2018 to 2022 … Navy is 6-2 in home openers against Coppin State, including winning three-straight home openers against the Eagles in 2019, 2020 and 2021 … Junior infielder Brock Murtha has totaled three hits, two runs scored and a walk over the last two home openers for Navy … Junior infielder Victor Izquierdo tallied two hits and a RBI in last year's home opener against Georgetown, while both junior catcher Mac McCommons and sophomore Evan Brown registered a hit apiece in that 2024 home opener … Navy junior righty Tyler Grenn has allowed two runs on six hits over 7.0 innings pitched in a pair of home-opener appearances … Grenn earned the start in last year's home opener while fellow junior Jackson Beattie got the starting nod in 2023.
 
Navy in Midweeks
The Mids went 5-4 in midweek contests last season under first-year head coach Chuck Ristano after going 2-8 in 2023 … Navy went 3-2 in midweek home games last year … Victor Izquierdo batted .444 in midweek games last season, racking up four doubles, eight runs and 10 RBI over those nine starts, while 12 walks helped him post a .625 on-base percentage in midweeks … Hitting .286 in midweeks, Andrew Manning totaled 11 runs, three doubles and nine RBI in those contests … Brock Murtha garnered a .281 batting average in midweeks to go with six runs, four doubles, five RBI and three steals.
 
Series History
Navy and Manhattan will meet for the first time in program regular-season history on Tuesday … The two sides did play each other during the Fall 2023 exhibition slate in the leadup to the 2024 season … The Mids went 1-3 against MAAC schools last season, while Navy is scheduled to play five games against MAAC members this season.
 
Scouting Manhattan
The Jaspers come into Tuesday with a 1-6 record, as Manhattan was swept opening weekend at #18 Mississippi State but bounced back for an 8-2 win at Alcorn State last Tuesday, while this past weekend saw the Jaspers lose three straight at Charleston Southern … Ryan Lordier is hitting a team-best .350 (7-for-20) through six games while also collecting three stolen bases … Brad Grasser has tossed a team-high 7.1 innings on the season with five strikeouts … Preston Tamm started the midweek against Alcorn State, picking up the win after tossing four shutout innings … Trevor Hansen is the lone returning all-conference performer for the Jaspers, taking home All-MAAC Second Team honors in 2024 with a .291 average and a team-leading nine home runs.
