Nationally-Ranked Women’s Lacrosse Primed for Second Top 25 Match Up

#19/22 Navy travels to play #11/10 Virginia on Wednesday in Charlottesville.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 19/22 Navy women's lacrosse team (3-1) travels to Charlottesville, Va. for a top 25 midweek contest against No. 11/10 Virginia (2-1) on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. at Klockner Stadium. The game, which will mark the second top 25 match up for the Mids this season, will be broadcast on ACCNX and live stats will be available.

All-Time Series
Navy and Virginia have met on the lacrosse field seven times in program history with the Cavaliers holding a 6-1 advantage. The Midshipmen are 1-2 against the Cavs at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, but 0-4 on the road versus Uva in Klockner Stadium.
 
The two teams have played close in every game with the largest margin of victory for either team being four goals (Virginia W, 13-9 in 2016). The games have been decided by an average of nearly three goals (2.71) with the four of the last five meetings being determined by exactly three scores.
 
The game on Wednesday marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2020. The two teams met at least once each season between 2015 and 2020. Navy and Virginia met twice during the 2019 season. The Mids opened the 2019 campaign in Charlottesville, dropping a 15-12 decision in the season opener. The two teams met in the NCAA Tournament with the Cavaliers once again claiming a 15-12 win to end the Mids' season.
 
Head coach Cindy Timchal is no stranger to the Cavaliers, holding a 22-19 overall record against Virginia in 41 meetings.
 
Additionally, UVA's head coach Sonia LaMonica ('03) played for Timchal during her time with the Maryland. LaMonica is the second former player that Timchal will coach against this season. Timchal coached against Alex Kahoe (Maryland '00) in the season opener as Navy defeated Saint Joseph's, 16-9, to start the year.
 
Three current Midshipmen – Morgan Lewis (Alexandria), Josie Mazzeo (Virginia Beach), and Bella Paradiso (Falls Church) – call Virginia home.
 
Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy fell to 3-1 on the season, dropping an 11-9 decision at home to Harvard on Sunday morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
 
As a team, the Midshipmen have tallied 63 goals with 26 assists, while picking up 73 ground balls, winning 63 draw controls, and causing 33 turnovers.
 
Entering the week, Emily Messinese leads the team with 18 points on a team-high 14 goals and four assists. She is followed by Emma Kennedy with 13 points on 11 goals and two assists. Alyssa Chung and Mikayla Williams are tied with 11 points apiece. Chung has nine goals and two helpers, while Williams is balanced with six goals and five assists for her 11 points. Ava Yovino rounds out the Mids' double-digit point scorers with 10 points on six goals and four assists.
 
Tori DiCarlo (7g 2a) and Taylor Miles (5g 2a) follow with nine and seven points, respectively. Lola Leone has three goals and an assist for four points, while Maggie DeFabio has two helpers for a pair of points. Chloe Brown (1g), Anna Gotterup (1a), Maura Murphy (1g), and Bella Paradiso (1a) close out Navy's point scorers with one point apiece.
 
Defensively, Navy has caused 33 of its opponents 58 turnovers, including 10 unsuccessful clear attempts. Felicia Giglio leads the team with six caused turnovers with Jaclyn Johns adding five takeaways. DeFabio and Messinese have four caused turnovers apiece, while Jalin Jenkins and Williams both have three. Yovino leads the team with 11 ground balls, while DeFabio has eight to her credit. Williams and Giglio follow with six each with DiCarlo, Jenkins, Messinese adding five GB each.
 
Giglio leads the team with 25 saves in 228:29 minutes of action, while adding six caused turnovers and six ground balls. In her last outing, the sophomore goalkeeper finished with a career-high 11 saves, marking her second game with double-digit stops. Emma Richardell has registered two saves in 11 and a half minutes of action.
 
Alyssa Daley leads all players with 36 draw victories. With her 10 draw wins on Sunday against Harvard, Daley now has 304 career draws, becoming the third player in program history with 300 or more draw controls. She joins Loren Generi ('15) and Reagan Roelofs ('22) who had 493 and 390, respectively.
 
Messinese has chipped in nine while Williams has won eight draws. Yovino has added two draw controls with Johns, Miles, Murphy, and Paradiso have also been credited with a draw victory.
 
Scouting the Opposition
The Cavaliers are looking to rebound from Saturday's home loss against Stanford (L, 13-7). The Cavs were 3-1 last season when coming off a loss.
 
Junior goalkeeper Mel Josephson is averaging 7.66 saves per game, with a season-high nine in Virginia's victory at Princeton. Josephson averaged 8.05 per game last season.
 
Sophomore attacker Jenna DiNardo has started the season with three-straight multi-goal games. She has 14 multi-goal games for her career. DiNardo continues to lead the team in scoring with nine goals this season.
 
Senior attacker Kate Miller and sophomore attacker Addi Foster are tied with DiNardo for the team points lead. All three have 10 points. Miller has seven goals and three assists, while Foster has six goals and four assists.
 
Sophomore midfielder Kate Galica has 19 draw controls this season, averaging 6.33 per game.
 
National Rankings
The Navy women's lacrosse team is currently ranked in two of the three national polls. The Midshipmen are No. 19 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll rankings this week, while coming in at No. 22 in the Inside Lacrosse Media poll. Additionally, the Mids are receiving votes according to USA Lacrosse.
 
In its history, Navy has been ranked 96 total weeks, including a stretch of 46 weeks from the final poll of 2017 (May 30) to April 5, 2021. The Mids' first appearance in the national rankings came on March 11, 2013, coming in at No. 20. The Midshipmen's highest ranking – sixth – came in the final polls of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Last season, the Midshipmen were in the top 25 poll for seven weeks, rising as high as No. 17 and finishing the season 20th.
 
The University of Virginia enters the week ranked No. 11 according to the IWLCA, No. 10 according to Inside Lacrosse, and No. 9 according to USA Lacrosse.
