BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Five members of the Navy swimming and diving teams earned placement onto the Patriot League All-Academic Team for the sport, which was announced today by the league office.
Sarah Eldridge and
Caroline Irwin were named to the women's team and
Jake Douberly,
Ben Irwin and
Ben Mauldin were selected for the men's team.
Nominees for the team needed to be at least a sophomore academically, have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and be a key member of the team.
Eldridge has earned first-team all-league honors in each of her three seasons. The junior with a 3.23 GPA as an ocean and atmospheric science major placed third in the 1650 free, fourth in the 500 free and sixth in the 400 IM at last week's league meet.
Caroline Irwin received all-league accolades in all four of her seasons including first-team nods in 2023 and '24. Also a member of the 2024 all-academic team, she has posted a 3.37 GPA as a data science major. Irwin advanced to the championship final in nine of her 12 career individual events at the league meet. This year she placed second in the 200 fly, third in the 100 fly and sixth in the 50 free. Irwin also swam on Navy's winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
Douberly also was named to the 2024 all-academic team. The Navy team captain has tallied a 3.81 GPA while majoring in operations research. In the pool, he finished in eighth place in the 400 IM, 12th place in the 200 back and 14th place in the 200 fly last weekend.
Ben Irwin totaled three medals at this year's league championship to earn first-team all-league honors for the second year in a row. The 2024 league rookie of the year won the 200 back and 200 fly for the second-straight season and finished in second place in the 100 back. He posted NCAA B cut times in all three events, with his 200 back time of 1:40.04 setting new Navy, Patriot League, Patriot League Championship and Kinney Natatorium records. The sophomore has posted a 3.65 GPA and is an operations research major.
Mauldin joined Irwin in receiving a first-team all-league accolade this year. He placed second in the 500 free, seventh in the 200 fly and eighth in the 1650 free. The physics major carries a 3.32 cumulative grade-point average.
