ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Staying undefeated in midweek games, the Navy baseball team posted a 13-1 run-rule victory over visiting Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
Â
Scoring a season-high 13 runs in just seven innings of play, the Midshipmen had three players record multi-hit performances, highlighted by
Victor Izquierdo's two-hit, three-RBI outing, while the Navy pitching staff limited the Big Green to just four hits.
Â
Navy opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when
Brock Murtha raced home on
Jack Killelea's triple following a one-out walk, while Killelea cruised home himself on an opposite-field double from Izquierdo with two outs to make it 2-0.
Â
The Mids continued to add to its lead in the second inning, as
Evan Brown worked a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch, while the third frame saw
Andrew Manning double in Killelea and
Evan Brown immediately follow with his own double over the Dartmouth outfielders' heads to plate
Ty DePerno and Manning.
Â
Another wild pitch with a runner on third base in the fourth inning scored Murtha again, extending the Navy lead to 7-0, but two Big Green walks to start the fifth eventually led to Taer Rodriguez's RBI single that ruined the Mids' shutout hopes.
Â
Navy responded in the home half of the fifth with a pair of one-out singles and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, while a catcher's interference with
Noah Ditas call drove in Manning for the first run of what would become a six-run frame. A throwing error on an ensuing fielder's choice then plated two more runs, while a wild pitch with Ditas on third and a two-run singles from Izquierdo later in the inning put the Mids in front, 13-1.
Â
With rookie
Kevin Maurer holding Dartmouth in check during his third inning of work in the sixth,
Owen Geiger then took the ball in the seventh and retired the side to lock up the run-rule victory for Navy.
Â
Making a scheduled three-inning start, right-hander
Matt Archibald earned the win after holding the Big Green hitless and racking up four strikeouts, while Maurer allowed one run on four hits over his three frames and Geiger struck out one in his inning of relief.
Â
For Dartmouth, Bryce Loeger lasted 1.2 innings in the start, allowing three runs to receive the loss, while Danny Will also allowed three runs in his 1.1 innings, Joseph Chambers went 1.1 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) and Trey Sejnoha finished the game with 1.2 innings of work that included three of his four runs allowed being unearned.
