ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the second consecutive time in the series, No. 22 Navy (7-4, 2-1 Patriot League) and No. 17 Loyola (7-5, 4-0 Patriot League) needed overtime to determine a winner. The two teams battled hard for four quarters and were locked at 19-19 at the end of regulation on Wednesday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The Greyhounds' freshman Mim Suares-Jury scored with 65 seconds remaining in overtime to break the tie in a marathon Patriot League game to give the visitors a 20-19 win.
"That was a really tough loss for Navy women's lacrosse," head coach
Cindy Timchal said after the game. "We had opportunities. We played our hearts out and you could see that on the field. The team kept fighting and fighting and fighting. Loyola is the kind of team that comes back in that second half. They proved with their Australian [Mims Suares-Jury] and Chase Boyle who was a 2024 Tewaaraton finalist. They hurt us in the draw controls with Boyle being one of the best in the country in the draw. I think our team did an amazing job. I thought we played tough defense, although you don't think it when you see that many goals. I am disappointed in the loss, but I could not be prouder of the way this Navy women's lacrosse team performed tonight."
The two teams combined for 39 goals, which is the most between the two teams in the series. The 19 goals for Navy tied for the most by the Midshipmen against the Greyhounds, tying the 19-goal performance in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament when Navy defeated Loyola, 19-15. The 2018 NCAA Tournament game was also the previous high of 34 combined goals in a game in the series.
With the win, Loyola extended its regular season Patriot League undefeated streak to 88 games. Navy is the only Patriot League school to defeat Loyola, beating the Greyhounds in the conference tournament twice (2017, '18) and the NCAA Tournament once (2018). All three victories for the Mids occurred at the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore.
Navy tallied 19 goals on 45 shots on the night, including a season-high seven free-position goals on the night. The seven eight-meter goals are the second most in program history, coming one short of tying the school record of eight, which has been accomplished four times, most recently against Boston University in 2022.
Alyssa Chung and
Mikayla Williams led the way for the Midshipmen. The duo matched one another with six points on five goals apiece and an assist each. The five goals tied a career-high for both Chung and Williams. Chung has now scored five goals in all three Patriot League games, while Williams has five scores in back-to-back contests.
Emily Messinese and
Tori DiCarlo added hat tricks with both seniors notching three scores apiece.
Taylor Miles finished with two scores with
Emma Kennedy rounding out the scoring with a goal.
Maggie DeFabio joined Chung and Williams with an assist to combine for Navy's three helpers.
At goal,
Felicia Giglio set a new career high, finishing the game with 12 saves. The sophomore got stronger as the game progressed, notching seven stops after halftime, including five saves in the fourth quarter. In addition, Giglio tied
Jaclyn Johns for the team lead with three ground balls. DeFabio led the team with two of Navy's eight caused turnovers.
Alyssa Daley led Navy with eight draw wins, while Williams added six draw controls. Messinese chipped in two with
Caroline Gage coming away with a draw win.
For Loyola, Georgia Latch led all players with 10 points on a balanced five goals and five assists, while adding nine draw controls. The Midshipmen limited 2024 Tewaaraton Award finalist Chase Boyle to just a pair of goals, however, Boyle led all players with 10 draw controls. Elisa Faklaris added four goals and Ava Kane scored three for a hat trick. Suares-Jury scored a pair of goals, including the game-winning goal for the Greyhounds. Lauren Spence picked up the win at goal, surrendering 19 goals while notching eight saves.
Loyola was the first team to score, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter. Navy took a 3-1 lead thanks to a run that saw Chung, Messinese, and Miles all scoring. The Greyhounds knotted the game at three on a pair of goals. Chung notched her second score of the first quarter to put the Mids in front 4-3, but back-to-back goals by the Hounds put the visitors in front. Chung completed her seventh hat trick in 11 games with a third goal of the first quarter to lock the game at 5-5.
In the second quarter, the Midshipmen retook the lead as DiCarlo, Chung, and Messinese all converted free-position opportunities to take an 8-5 advantage. The Greyhounds responded with two goals, but a 4-1 run by the Mids extended the lead to 12-8. DiCarlo, Williams, Chung, and Miles all found the back of the net during the 4-1 stretch. Loyola scored to cut the lead to three, but DiCarlo pushed the Navy advantage back to four at 13-9. The Greyhounds cut the margin to three, sending the game into halftime with the Mids in front, 13-10.
The second half opened with a 3-0 run for Loyola to tie the game at 13. Williams scored three of the next four goals to put Navy in front, 16-14. The visitors closed the third quarter with their second 3-0 run of the period to take a 17-16 lead into the fourth quarter.
Kennedy and Williams opened up the scoring in the fourth to tie and regain the lead, 18-17. Boyle and Emma Talago countered with goals to put Loyola back in front by one. With time winding down in regulation, Messinese found the back of the net to send the game into overtime tied at 19-19.
In overtime, Navy won the draw control and immediately called timeout to set up a play. The Midshipmen saw an open Williams cutting in front of the goal, but her shot was just wide. Loyola took possession and eventually drew a free-position opportunity. Kane looked like she had scored the game-winning goal for the Greyhounds, but the junior stepped in the crease turning the ball over to the Mids. In the second three-minute half of overtime, Latch won the draw control giving Loyola possession. Giglio stood tall, turning away a Latch shot, but Suares-Jury was able to score the sudden-victory goal with 65 seconds remaining in overtime.
Up next, Navy hits the road for a Patriot League game against Boston University at Nickerson Field in Boston on Saturday, March 29 at 12 noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
