Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Hot Start by #24 Army Costs #20 Navy Women’s Lacrosse in Star Game

Army jumped out to a 7-0 lead and Navy was unable to recover, dropping a 17-12 decision.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – On a cold, wet, and snowy day in West Point, N.Y., No. 24 Army (10-2, 5-1 Patriot League) used a 7-0 run to open the game and ultimately post a 17-12 victory over No. 20 Navy women's lacrosse (9-5, 4-2 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium in the annual Star Game.

The Midshipmen outscored the Black Knights 11-10 in the final three quarters, but were unable to overcome the quick start by the home team.

"It is a tough loss for Navy women's lacrosse," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "Credit Army. They played really well at home today. They had a fast start, and we had a bit of a slow start; but we fought all the way through. It is a tough loss. We pride ourselves on being tough and going hard. It is disappointing and I am sorry we were not able to come away with a victory today. That being said, we are going to regroup because we have two games this week that we have to prepare for."

Offensively, Navy had a balanced attack as seven Midshipmen combined for 12 goals, including five that notched multiple scores. Alyssa Chung, Tori DiCarlo, Emma Kennedy, Mikayla Williams, and Ava Yovino each scored two goals each, while Emily Messinese and Taylor Miles added one score apiece. DiCarlo and Kennedy added two assists each with Chung and Messinese also being credited with helpers.

On defense, the Midshipmen caused three turnovers with Maggie DeFabio, Jaclyn Johns, and Miles being credited with takeaways. Caroline Gage led the team with two ground balls with Grace Peterson, DeFabio, DiCarlo, Johns, Miles, and Williams also picking up ground balls. Felicia Giglio and Emma Richardell split time in the cage, combining for three saves.

Draw specialist Alyssa Daley registered 14 of Navy's 21 draw wins in the game. It was the senior's seventh double-digit draw performance this season and the 19th of her career. With the 14 draws, Daley becomes the second player in Navy history to record 400 or more draw wins (410 draws), joining Loren Generi ('15) who finished her career with 493.

For Army, Allison Reilly led the way with eight points on a team-high six goals and team-best two assists. Brigid Duffy was held to one goal, but picked up a team-high four ground balls and won a team-best nine draw controls. Lindsey Serafine earned the victory at goal, working a complete game allowing 12 goals with nine saves.

Army opened up the scoring, starting the game with a 7-0 run over the first 14 minutes of the first quarter. Miles ended the run by converting a free-position opportunity to put Navy on the scoreboard.

In the second quarter, Williams buried a pass from Messinese in the back of the net to trim the margin to five, 7-2. Army countered with a free-position goal, but Kennedy cut the margin back to five with a goal. Another free-position goal by the Black Knights extended the home team's advantage back to six. Yovino dodged a defender and skipped a ball past the goalie to once again pull the Midshipmen to within five, 9-4. Army was able to score with 15 ticks remaining on the clock to take a six-goal advantage into halftime.

The Black Knights increased their advantage to 14-5 in the third quarter, outscoring the Midshipmen 4-1. DiCarlo was the lone Mid to score in the period.

Navy mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter. Yovino took a pass from Kennedy and slipped it by the Army keeper. Following a Black Knight goal, Navy used a 4-0 run to close the gap. Chung opened the run with a goal off of a Kennedy helper, while senior DiCarlo and Messinese followed with unassisted scores. Williams continued the run to close the gap to 15-10 with 3:44 to play. The Midshipmen used Giglio as an extra defender and the Black Knights were able to capitalize, scoring on an open net. DiCarlo assisted on back-to-back goals by Kennedy and Chung to trim the margin to four, 16-12, but Army used another empty net goal to provide the final margin, 17-12.

Up next, the Midshipmen travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for a midweek game at Lehigh on Wednesday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Frank Banko Field. The game between the Mids and Mountain Hawks will be the broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
