Navy Totals 31 Event Wins at Track and Field Meets

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field teams registered seven top-10 program marks and won a total of 31 events this weekend at the Navy Spring Invitational at Ingram Field in Annapolis and at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. Neither meet had team scoring.

"Every meet that we have on our calendar served a purpose and is important. I think we did a good job for the most part, but we still have room to grow and improve. We did a good job this weekend," said Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook.

Freshman Billy Driscoll won the first track event of the day in the 3,000m steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:16.53.

Susanna Henderson led the way in the 3,000m steeplechase in a field that consisted of all Midshipmen. Henderson ran a personal-best 11:26.12 to improve upon her previous record (11:34.03) by nearly eight seconds.

Jane Phillips won the 1500m race for the first time in her career with a season-best time of 4:34.29.

Josephine Zink won the women's 400m race with a career-best time of 58.31.

Mason Wokoma clocked a season-best 50.08 in the 400m run to win the event on the men's side.

Caroline Rey won her second individual collegiate event in the 100m sprint with a season-best time of 12.39.
Fabian France won the 100m dash (11.10) for his first collegiate victory.  He edged fellow Mid Luca Bertolasio (11.17) in a tight finish. France also won a second event in the 200m where he clocked a 22:03.

Katelyn Pepin won the 800m run for the second time in her career with a time of 2:15.35. Anthony Engle won the 800m on the men's side in 1:54.85.

It was a close finish in the women's 400m hurdles as Sophia Notaro (1:04.42) earned the narrow victory over Gabrielle Bernhard (1:04.62).

Lilli Santomauro clocked a career-best 200m time of 25:61 for her first victory as a Mid.

Sarah Colebrooke earned her first career victory when she won the 3,000m run in 11:04.07.

Nicholas Valdivieso posted the top time in the 5,000m with a career-best 14:41.12.

The team of Zink, Pepin, Abby Lutz and Milana Breuninger concluded the track events with the top 4x400m relay time of 4:03.30.

Nick Simmons won the Mids' first decathlon of the season with a personal-best 7,066 total points. Simmons won the 100m dash (10.85), the long jump (7.25m / 23' 9.5"), discus (38.97m / 127' 10") and javelin (52.60m / 172' 7").

"Competing in seven or 10 events is a challenge but these guys are used to it because they are prepared well. Coach [Chris] Johnson has done a fantastic job," Cook said.

Navy swept the discus event led by Reilly Payne and Jordynn Hutchinson. Payne won the event for the first time in his career with a career-best throw of 47.98m (157' 5"). Hutchinson claimed her third discus title this spring with a distance of 43.19m (141' 8").

Hutchinson also won the hammer throw (51.20m / 168' 0") for the fifth time in the last six meets. She concluded her day by winning the shot put with a toss of 14.22m (46' 8").

Benjemen Schneider won the high jump for the first time this spring with a leap of 2.05m (6' 8.75"). Sheldon Ulmer claimed second place with a jump of 2.02m (6' 7.5").

Freshman Zoie Tesi won the high jump for the fourth time this spring with a height of 1.71m (5' 7.25").

Sebasteon Allen won the long jump event for the first time in his collegiate career with a jump of 6.80m (22' 3.75"). Allen also won the triple jump for the second time this season with a leap of 14.65m (46' 2.5").

Renny Murphy won the javelin for the third-consecutive meet with a throw of 48.32m (158' 6").

Keyshawn Dolford won the shot put for the third time this year with a toss of 14.55m (47' 9").  He bested Adam Szatanek by .02 meters for the victory.

London Davis broke her personal record in the triple jump with a mark of 10.89m (35' 8.75") for her first collegiate victory.

Brian Schloeder led the way in the pole vault with a height of 4.91m (16' 1.25").

Malachi Cummings won his first career event in the javelin with a mark of 57.86m (189' 10").

Virginia Challenge Recap
Junior Nathan Kent recorded Navy's only victory of the meet in the 400m where he ran the ninth-fastest time (46.21) in program history.

Marcel Jackson had a big weekend with a pair of 100m top-10 times.  He clocked the second-fastest time of 10.37 in the prelims to claim the last spot (8th) for the finals. Jackson followed that effort by running the third-best time in program history (10.40) to take fourth place in the finals.

Senior Jacques Guillaume competed in the 400m hurdles where he ran Navy's fourth-fastest time (51.11) to finish in third place. Guillaume now owns six of the top-10 fastest 400m hurdles time in school history.

The men's 4x100m relay team that consisted of Jackson, Kent, Jonah Johnson and Tyler Yurich posted the second-fastest time (39.74) in Navy history to finish in second place.

The squad of Pete deJonge, Kent, Simon Alexander and Guillaume continued the relay success with another second-place finish in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:09.36.

Murphy Smith clocked a career-best and the eight-fastest 5,000m time in Navy history in 13:57.43.

Sophie Compton recorded the fourth-best 5,000m time in program history with a 16:26.67.

David Walker finished in third place in the 400 meters hurdles with a time of 53.30.

May McConkey competed in the 10,000m run for the first time in her career where she posted an impressive fourth-place finish in 36:33.17.

"May [McConkey] has worked really hard going from walk-on to now running a solid time in the 10k in a very competitive meet. It's impressive; hats off to her and the hard work she put into it," remarked Cook.

Freshman Dane Eike ran a season-best 1,500m time of 3:49.03 to take second place. Matt Newell finished behind Eike for third place with a 3:49.42.

Alexandria Wercinski finished in sixth place in the 1,500m with a career-best time of 4:26.11.

Navy will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., next week to compete in the Penn Relays. The 129th edition of America's oldest and largest track and field competition runs Thursday through Saturday.
