USA Lacrosse Names Navy’s Zach Hayashi to U20 Team

SPARKS, Md. —  Navy men's lacrosse standout Zach Hayashi (Jr / North Potomac, Md.) has been named to the 22-player roster that will represent the United States at the 2025 World Lacrosse Men's U20 Championship held in Jeju Island, Korea from August 15-24. Hayashi joins former teammate Jackson Bonitz as the only Navy players selected to the U.S. Men's U20 Team since it was established in 1988 (1988, '92, '96, '99, '03, '08, '12, '16, '20/22, '25).

"Thank you to the USA Lacrosse coaches and staff for giving me the opportunity to be on the U20 Team," said Hayashi. "I'm truly honored and grateful to be named to the team and to have the opportunity to wear the Team USA jersey. I'm indebted to my family, friends, coaches and teammates who have helped and supported me throughout the years. Without this incredible support system, none of this would have been possible. I hope to represent the Naval Academy and the Navy men's lacrosse program to the best of my ability."

Beginning with an initial tryout in June 2024, head coach Shawn Nadelen and his staff have had five opportunities to evaluate the nation's top young players and announced the final roster following a recent training camp at Cornell University.

The roster includes four two-time USILA All-Americans – Owen Duffy (North Carolina), Shawn Lyght (Notre Dame), Anderson Moore (Georgetown) and Brady Wambach (North Carolina) –
among its 18 collegiate players and four of the top high school seniors from the Class of 2025. The 22-player roster includes representation from 15 colleges and players from high school
programs in nine different states.

Hayashi joins North Carolina's Brady Wambach as the only faceoff specialists named to U20 team and he is one of just two players overall representing the Patriot League (Tim Shannehan / Boston U.).

"We could not be more proud of Zach for earning this tremendous honor, and we are certainly not surprised," said seventh-year Navy men's lacrosse head coach Joe Amplo. "His daily impact on our program is immeasurable. Zach embodies the core values of Navy Lacrosse through his leadership, relentless competitiveness, and unwavering toughness.

"Now, as a member of the U.S. National Team, he will bring those same qualities to the international stage. Team USA will undoubtedly benefit from the presence of someone who consistently raises the standard for those around him.

"We will be Zach's and Team USA's biggest fans as they set out in pursuit of another gold medal."

In just two short seasons, Hayashi has rewritten the record books at Navy. His body of work from his freshman season was spectacular, as he closed out the 2024 campaign by being named the ECAC Rookie of the Year along with Patriot League Rookie of the Year, becoming just the third Navy player to earn the award (2004 - midfielder Billy Looney and 2011 - attackman Tucker Hull). Garnering Second-Team All-Patriot League recognition, Hayashi also became one of only 5 Navy freshmen all-time to garner All-Patriot League accolades, joining midfielder Basil Daratsos (2007), faceoff specialist Brady Dove (2014), defenseman Jackson Bonitz (2021) and long-stick midfielder AJ Marsh (2024).

He broke several school records in his first season, including the single-season faceoff mark. He stands alone as the only player in program history to reach 200 faceoff wins in a single season, breaking the previous record of 185 wins. He also broke the Navy freshman records for faceoff wins (214) and attempts (372) which were both previously held by Brady Dove (163-289 / 2014).

Hayashi also broke the school record for single-season ground balls (105) and joins Dove as the only two players in Navy history to reach 100 ground balls in a single season. Additionally, he shattered the Navy freshman mark by 22 ground balls (Dove, 83 / 2014).

A member of the 2024 Patriot League All-Tournament Team, Hayashi also broke the school records for most faceoffs won (18) and attempted (26), along with most ground balls (11) in a Patriot League Tournament contest in the Mids' win over Loyola in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.

Hayashi was primed to have another sensational season last spring, but instead sustained a knee injury just four games into the season. Ever the competitor, Hayashi fought his way back from the injury to return for the final four games of the season, including the Star Game against Army.

Just 24 games into his career, Hayashi stands fourth on Navy's career top-20 faceoff wins list (277) and is 23 wins shy of becoming only the fourth faceoff specialist in program history to reach 300 wins. Meanwhile, he needs just 5 ground balls to join Navy's career top-20 ground balls leader board. He owns 134 ground balls to date.

The U.S. will open its schedule on August 16 with a pool play game against Canada and will also have pool play games against Australia and the Haudenosaunee. All four participants from Pool A will automatically advance to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs which begin on August 21. The gold medal game is scheduled for August 24.

The United States has won each of the previous nine World Lacrosse men's junior field championships, most recently in 2022 when it defeated Canada 12-10 in the championship game in Limerick, Ireland.

This is the first time this event has been held in Asia since 1996 when the U.S. U19 team defeated Australia 13-8 in the championship game in Tokyo.
