Navy’s Jack Tarzy Earns Medalist Honors, Mids Finish Second at The Goat

ANNAPOLIS, Md. //  Navy golf team captain Jack Tarzy (Sr / Medford, N.J.) shot a 3-under par 68 in the final round of The Goat held at the Naval Academy Golf Club on Sunday to clinch individual medalist honors for the first time in his career, while Navy, as a team, placed second with an 11-over par 863. It marked the third-lowest 54-hole score in relation to par by the Mids in program history and the lowest since they shot a 2-under par 850 at the Phoenix Invitational Oct. 14-15, 2019.

Sorting Out the Finish
Navy trailed frontrunner and conference foe Loyola Maryland by 5 strokes heading into Sunday's final round, but was unable to catch the Greyhounds. Loyola took the team title behind a 6-over par 858 (289-284-285). The Greyhounds were 5-over after the first round, but shot 1-over in their final 36 holes. The Mids were 3 over after the opening round, but slipped back with a 7-over par 291 in the afternoon portion of the tournament. They bounced back on Sunday with a 1-over par 285, but could not gain ground on the Greyhounds, settling for second.

Seton Hall, who sat in second place entering the final round, closed out the tournament in third with a 14-over par 866 (284-290-292), followed by UConn in fourth with a 19-over par 871 (290-288-293) and William & Mary in fifth with a 25-over par 877 (296-295-286).

Tarzy (66-71-68-205 / -8) was spectacular for the Mids from start to finish, opening the tournament with a 5-under par 66, the lowest round of the tournament. He held a narrow 1-stroke lead over Georgetown's Barnes Blake heading in the final day, but once again put together a strong performance with a 3-under par 68 to defeat Blake by 5 strokes and earn his first-collegiate victory. Tarzy was the only player to shoot par or under par in all three rounds (-5, 66 / E, 71 / -3, 68).

Tarzy's 8-under par 205 marked the third-lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in program history and the lowest since Nicholas Klock shot a 13-under par 200 at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 10-11, 2021.

Tarzy had finished as the runner-up on three occasions, including last year's The Goat when Loyola's Gustavo Rangel bested him by a single stroke.

Navy Notes
In addition to Tarzy, two other players turned in top-15 finishes for the Mids. Tarzy's classmate, Chip Deegan (Sr / Newport Beach, Calif.), tied for 10th with a 3-over par 216. He chipped away at his score each round, beginning the tournament with a 3-over par 74, followed by a 1-over par 72 and a 1-under par 70. It marked Deegan's third tournament in the span of two weeks, as in addition to The Goat and the Folds of Honor Collegiate to open the season, he represented Navy at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup last Monday and Tuesday.

Newcomer Hudson Mitchell (Pensacola, Fla.) finished just a stroke behind Deegan in 13th in what was just his second-collegiate tournament appearance. He opened 3-over (74), but came back to shoot par (71) and 1-over (72) in the final round to post a 4-over par 217.

Making his collegiate debut was Sebastian Alonzo (Fr / Azusa, Calif.) who placed 65th with an 18-over par 231 (73-77-81), while Derek Weaver (Sr / Hackettstown, N.J.) finished 78th with a 22-over par 235 (78-82-75).

Additionally, Navy had four golfers who competed as invidiuals, including Danny Auffant (Jr / Bellevue, Wash.) who finished just a stroke out of the top 20 with a 7-over par 220 (71-76-73) for 22nd. Rookie Josh Durthaler (Dunwoody, Ga.) finished a stroke behind Auffant in 24th with an 8-over par 221 (73-76-72), while Ed Scott (So / Lemont, Ill.)  finished 54th with a 15-over par 228 and Kaden Ausen (So / Puyallup, Wash.) was 71st with a 20-over par 233.

Next Up
Navy will use the next week to prepare for the Commander-In-Chief's Cup against rivals Army and Air Force which is slated to be played Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
