ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy wrestling team (3-4) used an early surge and three bonus-point victories to secure a 30-9 win over George Mason (4-3) on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Midshipmen jumped out to a 12-0 lead through the opening three bouts and sealed the dual by winning four of the final five matches, highlighted by a technical fall from
Zyan Hall and a pin by
Spencer Lanosga.
Â
"It's always good to come out of the weekend with a win," head coach
Cary Kolat said. "I told the guys after the Lehigh loss, 'let's get out of the weekend 1-1 and this can be used as momentum for the remainder of the season'."
Â
Navy jumped out to an early lead at 125 pounds as
Andrew Binni earned a 3-0 sudden-victory decision over Ben Monn. After a scoreless regulation, Binni sealed the win with a takedown in extra time to give the Mids a 3-0 advantage.
Â
At 133, No. 32-ranked
Brendan Ferretti provided the first bonus points of the afternoon, pinning Gunner Chambers at 3:54. Ferretti built a commanding lead with a takedown, near-fall points and a reversal before ending the bout to push Navy's lead to 9-0.
Â
"Ferretti's mindset has been really good this year," Kolat remarked. "He has faced some stiff competition this year, he's been in the matches, he's keeping himself sharp and his morale is high."
Â
Caedyn Ricciardi, ranked 33rd nationally at 141 pounds, followed with an 8-4 decision over Tate Hisley, using multiple takedowns and more than two minutes of riding time to keep the Mids rolling.
Â
George Mason got on the board at 149 as No. 19-ranked Kaden Cassidy defeated Navy captain
Kaemen Smith, 10-5, trimming the margin to 12-3.
Â
At 157, Navy's
Jonathan Ley battled 21st-ranked DJ McGee to a 1-1 tie through regulation. In sudden victory, McGee capitalized on a scramble to earn the takedown and narrow the score to 12-6.
Â
Navy answered immediately at 165, where No. 32-ranked
Dylan Elmore controlled the action in an 8-2 decision over Mason's Drew Dickson, highlighted by multiple takedowns and 2:32 of riding time. At 174, ninth-ranked
Danny Wask delivered another bonus-point performance, earning an 11-2 major decision for the Mids over 33rd-ranked Logan Messer.
Â
George Mason picked up its final points at 184 pounds, where No. 31-ranked Malachi DuVall edged Navy's
Gage Yackee, 1-0, scoring the bout's lone point on an escape.
Â
Navy responded by closing the dual with victories in the final two bouts. At 197, the 32nd-ranked Hall delivered a dominant effort, piling up seven takedowns and more than three minutes of riding time in a 24-7 technical fall over Jack Kelly.
Â
"This is the best we have seen Hall wrestle," Kolat stated. "He's getting better each week and he picked up a huge win last night. He's scoring points and that's what great wrestlers do."
Â
Heavyweight and No. 14-ranked Lanosga closed the dual in emphatic fashion, pinning Herbert Billups at 3:20 after building an early lead and securing a reversal to end the match.
Â
