Women’s Tennis Stays Undefeated with Win over Morgan State

Navy Moves to 4-0 on the Spring with 6-1 Victory Against the Bears

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Seizing its first 4-0 start since 2022, the Navy women's tennis team (4-0) remained undefeated this spring by rolling to a 6-1 victory over Morgan State (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

Completing its four-match homestand to open the dual season, the Midshipmen held on against an energized Bears squad to claim the doubles point, while sophomore Peyton Amspacher-Philemon started what turned into five-straight wins for Navy on the singles courts to lock up the Mids' victory.

A slow start did not deter junior Julia Lee and sophomore Ji Soo Oh in the No. 3 doubles match, ripping off five-straight points to knock off Roua Limem and Angelina Joao, 6-2, and get the first Navy win of the afternoon. Morgan State evened it up at the top spot when Lauryn Hall and Marta Serra Carles were able to stave off sophomore Emma Gu and freshman Anna Wiskowski's rally in a 6-2 decision, but the Mids' duo of sophomore Molly Bellia and rookie Jina Cha outlasted the No. 2 Bears pairing of Tyler Williams and Damla Arslan, 6-4, to secure the doubles point.

Amspacher-Philemon kicked off the run of five-straight singles wins when she rattled off a 6-2, 6-2 victory of Serra Carles in the No. 5 matchup, while Gu was right behind her in a 6-2, 6-1 beating of Arslan at the No. 2 position to put Navy on the edge of clinching. Cha sealed the Mids' 4-0 start when she handled Hall, 6-4, 6-1, on the fourth court, while Fu notched the 6-4, 6-2 victory against Julia Jeffrey in the No. 2 slot and Wiskowski battled past Williams at the No. 6 position via a 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 score.

Morgan State picked up its lone point in the last match to conclude, as top Bears player Michaela Stephens posted a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 win over junior Olivia Fermo.

Head Coach Keith Puryear Comments
"Great job by the ladies today in being prepared to battle after last night's tough match with Richmond. Morgan State brought great energy and I felt we did a fairly good job in maintaining momentum once we gained a foothold today. Once again, our doubles did a good job of grabbing the point. Afterwards, Peyton shined in singles play, which was good to see, and Anna Wiskowski fought back well after losing the first set. We're looking forward to a good week of practice in preparation for next weekend's trip to South Bend."
