ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy (6-4) men's tennis team recorded a 7-0 victory over Hofstra (0-2) and lost a 4-3 decision to George Mason (2-1), Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
Navy vs. Hofstra
Hofstra had only five players in the lineup, which meant Navy needed to win just one of the two doubles matches to earn the point.
George Cutone and
Tommy Kim combined for a 6-3 win over Amit Alberg and Hideko Matsuoka at No. 2 doubles to do just that.
The score essentially was 2-0 when singles began as the Mids were awarded a point at No. 6 singles due to the Pride not having a player available for that position in the lineup.
Jason Kim then defeated Alberg, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and
Tommy Kim posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight over Matsuoka to give the Mids four team points.
In the remaining matches, Cutone defeated Alex Di Fruscia, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3,
Aniketh Ayinala beat Dominic Anderson, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 1 and
Zach Quattro registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Samarth Deepudass at No. 6.
Navy vs. George Mason
Navy also took a 1-0 lead after the doubles matches of its dual against George Mason.
J.J. Etterbeek and
Herrick Legaspi first combined for a 6-2 win over Niza Sumunyola and Edgar Vilain at the No. 2 flight. The Mids gained the point when their No. 1 team of
Lachlan Buckingham and
Jake Young posted a 7-5 victory over Ekansh Kumar and Monil Lotlikar.
The Patriots quickly took a 3-1 lead with straight-set victories at, in order, Nos. 6, 4 and 2 singles. Young kept the match alive when he defeated Kumar, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. However, a three-set win at the No. 5 flight secured the victory for George Mason.
The last match on the courts saw Legaspi defeat Deniz Okyay, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
Navy will play matches on Feb. 7 at home against Mount St. Mary's and on the road at Monmouth.
