WEST CALDWELL, N.J. – Senior running back
Hunter Gennicks rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns to lead Navy (3-1, 3-0 CSFL South) to a commanding 42-0 victory over Caldwell (1-3, 0-1 CSFL South) on Saturday at Bonnel Field, while the Midshipmen's defensive unit delivered a dominant, disruptive performance from start to finish to preserve the team's first shutout of the season.
Navy's offense amassed 441 total yards, including a dominant 335 yards on the ground. Gennicks averaged 9.1 yards per carry, highlighted by a 64-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. Running back
Broderick Freeman also heavily contributed to the rushing attack, racking up 90 yards on 11 carries and adding two touchdowns of his own on runs of 16 and eight yards.
Quarterback
Luke O'Connell managed the passing game efficiently, completing 8-of-15 attempts for 106 yards. O'Connell connected with wide receiver
Andrew Daly for a 24-yard touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter. Daly finished as the team's leading receiver with five catches for 65 yards.
Kicker
Jack Skubin was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, and
Rhett Sypult capped the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Navy's defense was equally stifling, limiting Caldwell to just 219 total yards of offense and keeping them off the scoreboard entirely.
Booran Dhaba and
Carson Trussell led the team with four tackles apiece, with Dhaba also contributing a sack and two tackles for loss. The defense consistently pressured Caldwell's backfield, racking up five total tackles for loss and two sacks, which were shared by Dhaba,
Ben Wellons, and
Wyatt Brown.
Navy's ball-hawking secondary was a constant threat, snagging three interceptions returned for a combined 73 yards by Trussell,
Jaden Ahn, and
Drake Murrell. Adding to the turnover frenzy, defensive back
Tucker Opdahl forced a critical first-quarter fumble that was recovered by defensive end
Gabriel Arriola, setting a suffocating tone early in the contest.
The Midshipmen opened the game with a six-play, 49-yard drive that took 2:37 off the clock. The series concluded when O'Connell connected with Daly for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Capitalizing on a Caldwell fumble, Navy marched 38 yards down the field in five plays. Gennicks punched it in with a 10-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0. Starting from their own 41-yard line, the Mids put together a quick six-play, 59-yard drive lasting 2:22. Freeman found the end zone on a 16-yard rush to give Navy a 21-0 advantage.
In the third quarter, Navy struck immediately on its first drive of the second half with a one-play, 64-yard scoring drive. Gennicks broke loose for a 64-yard touchdown run just 11 seconds into the possession. Later in the quarter, the offense orchestrated its longest possession of the game, a methodical 11-play, 80-yard march that consumed 6:59 of clock time. Freeman capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.
Following a 47-yard interception return by Trussell in the fourth quarter that set Navy up at the Caldwell 10-yard line, the offense needed just two plays to score. Sypult ran it in from two yards out to finalize the 42-0 victory.
Up next, the Midshipmen will have a bye week before hosting Cornell. The game is slated for Friday, Oct. 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Navy-Marines Corps Memorial Stadium.
