ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Becoming the third member of Navy's team to claim the honor in a four-week span, junior
Olivia Fermo was named the Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Fermo posted a 4-0 combined record as part of Navy's impressive weekend, helping the Mids nearly upset Virginia Tech before notching wins over Villanova and George Mason. Going 2-0 at the No. 2 singles spot, Fermo also tallied a 2-0 doubles record besides partner
Nicole Fu.
After Fermo and Fu won the last three points for a 6-4 victory over the No. 2 Hokies pairing of Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura, Fermo knocked off Laima Frosch, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 2 position during Navy's 4-3 loss at Virginia Tech.
Fermo then paired with Fu to get a 6-2 win over the top Villanova pairing of Maggie Gehrig and Emily Callahan to help Navy get a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats, while Fermo's 6-2, 6-4 win against No. 2 George Mason player Maitree Rout aided in the Mids' 7-0 shutout of the Patriots.
Fermo is now 17-6 in singles play this season and 15-8 in doubles action, going 14-7 alongside Fu.
The award marks Fermo's first weekly league honor of her career and the Mids' third weekly accolade of the season after freshman
Nicole Fu claimed the award on Jan. 27 and sophomore
Peyton Amspacher-Philemon notched the honor on Feb. 10.
Navy continues play when it hosts Georgetown and Towson on Saturday, Feb. 21, before heading to Delaware on Sunday, Feb. 22.
