NEWARK, Del. – The #11 Navy women's lacrosse team (3-0) posted a 15-10 midweek victory over Delaware (0-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Stadium. The Midshipmen used a 5-0 third quarter to put the game out of reach, securing their third win of the year.
"Coming up the day of for a midweek game is always tough," head coach
Cindy Timchal said after the game. "Delaware was coming off of two tough losses. They saw us as an opportunity to get back on track. It was back and forth early. At halftime, we reset and made a commitment to play Navy women's lacrosse. That no matter what the circumstances, we were going to play through no matter what. Delaware pushed us all the way through, which made us a better team today. I am proud of our effort. I am happy for the victory in a tough game."
The Midshipmen finished the game with 15 goals with six different players finding the back of the net. Senior team captain
Ava Yovino led the charge, finishing with eight points on a team-best four goals and four assists. She was joined by
Alyssa Chung, who also notched an assist, finishing with three goals and adding an assist.
Chloe Brown,
Maggie DeFabio,
Emma Kennedy, and
Taylor Miles rounded out the scoring with two goals apiece. Miles added a pair of helpers with
Anna Gotterup and
Mikayla Williams also being credited with assists.
The Navy defense caused six of Delaware's 12 turnovers in the game. The Midshipmen pressure held the Fightin' Blue Hens scoreless in the third quarter, allowing the offense to outscore the home team 5-0 in the third period. Six different players –
Felicia Giglio, Jalen Jenkins,
Maura Murphy, DeFabio, Kennedy, and Miles – were all credited with caused turnovers. DeFabio and Yovino paced the team with three ground balls apiece, while
Jaclyn Johns, Giglio, Miles, and Williams added two GB each.
In the circle, the Midshipmen finished with 11 draw wins.
Landen Cain, Murphy, Williams, and Yovino won two draws apiece with Kennedy adding a draw win.
For Delaware, Ella Rishko led the team with three goals with three addition Blue Hens finding the back of the net twice. Steph Marszal worked a complete game at goal, finishing with 15 goals allowed and 10 saves.
Delaware was the first team to score, taking an early 1-0 lead. Navy countered with back-to-back goals by Yovino and DeFabio. The Blue Hens tied the game, but the Midshipmen regained the lead thanks to a goal by Brown. The home team used consecutive scores to go ahead 4-3, but the Mids closed out the first quarter with scores by Miles and Yovino to retake a 5-4 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Midshipmen pushed the advantage to two, 6-4, as Kennedy found the back of the net. Following a Delaware score, Navy pushed its lead to three with goals by Chung and Yovino. UD closed the gap with back-to-back goals, but Chung extended the Mids' advantage back to two, 9-7, heading into halftime.
The Midshipmen held the Blue Hens scoreless in the third quarter, pushing the advantage to 14-7. Kennedy started the third-quarter run with her second goal of the game, while Miles added her second score to push the lead to four. Brown converted a free-position opportunity to extend the advantage. DeFabio and Yovino continued the run, giving the Mids a seven-goal lead through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, the two teams held one another scoreless for the first five minutes. UD broke the scoreless quarter with a pair of goals. The goals ended a run of nearly 25 minutes the Navy defense held Delaware scoreless. Chung scored on a free-position goal to put the Mids up six, but a late goal by the Blue Hens provided the final margin of 15-10.
