Owen Phypers Collects Patriot League Pitcher-of-the-Week Honors

Navy Rookie Tossed Seven Shutout Innings in Sunday’s 4-0 Win Against St. Bonaventure

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A day after tossing seven shutout innings, Navy freshman right-hander Owen Phypers has been named the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Phypers continued a dominant start to his college career, throwing seven scoreless frames in the Mids' 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday, as the rookie tallied four strikeouts while limiting the Bonnies to four hits and three walks. Carrying a no-hitter into the fifth, Phypers retired 13 of his first 15 batters faced while also racking up three of his strikeouts during his final 1.1 innings of work.

With Sunday's performance, Phypers became the first Navy freshman to have a scoreless seven-inning outing since Noah Song on April 17, 2016 against Lehigh, while the righty also became the first Mid to throw seven shutout innings since Brady Bendik accomplished the feat in back-to-back starts last season (March 28 at Army and April 5 vs. Lafayette). The seven innings also marked the longest start this season by a Navy pitcher.

Previously named the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 16, Phypers has a 1.06 ERA through his first three college starts, allowing just two runs over 17 innings. This also marks the second time a Navy hurler has earned PL Pitcher of the Week after Brady Bendik claimed the award on Feb. 16.

Navy continues its homestand Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch against Coppin State.
