BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its weekly women's lacrosse accolades and Navy student-athletes
Alyssa Chung,
Ava Yovino, and
Felicia Giglio were each recognized, following the Mids' 14-11 upset victory over #7 Florida on Saturday. Chung earned Attacker of the Week honors, while Yovino was tabbed Midfielder of the Week. For the third straight week, Giglio was named Goalkeeper of the Week.
The trio helped lead Navy to 14-11 upset victory over #7 Florida. The win tied for the second-highest ranked opponent that the Midshipmen have defeated in school history. Additionally, the win over #7 Florida gave Navy a pair of victories over top 10 opponents, after the Midshipmen opened the season with a 12-10 win over #10 Virginia. It is the second time in program history that the Mids have defeated multiple top-10 opponents in the same season and first time since the 2017 Final Four run.
Despite being face-guarded the entire game, Chung finished with four points on a pair of goals with two assists, while adding a ground ball and a caused turnover. She scored the first goal of the game to give Navy an early lead. Trailing 5-3, Chung converted a free-position shot to start a 3-0 run that gave the Mids a lead. The sophomore was credited with assists on goals by
Emma Kennedy and
Bella Paradiso during a 3-0 run for the Midshipmen that helped secure the upset victory.
Yovino led the team with six points on a team-high three goals and team-best three assists. Additionally, she added a team-high seven draw controls, while causing a team-best three turnovers and picking up a ground ball. The senior team captain netted all three goals in the first half, helping the Midshipmen take the lead just before halftime – a lead they would not relinquish. Yovino added assists on scores by
Taylor Miles,
Anna Gotterup (that proved to be the game-winning goal), and
Mikayla Williams. In addition, she helped Navy win 17 of the final 20 draws in the game, giving the Mids extra possessions to control the clock and pace of the game.
Giglio finished with a season-high eight saves, helping the Navy defense hold the potent Florida offense that entered the game ranked eighth (8th) in the NCAA in scoring offense with 16.25 goals per game to just 11 goals. Additionally, the Navy defense held Florida's Clark Hamilton, who entered the game fifth (5th) in the country with 4.50 goals per game, scoreless – limiting her to just a pair of shots that were both stopped by Giglio.
Up next, Navy travels to Tampa, Fla. to take on South Florida at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
