BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. // The Navy men's golf team shot a 42-over par 906 (303-304-299) to place 17th at the Mountaineer Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 Pat Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va. The tournament field faced numerous lightning delays throughout the two days of competition that featured five teams ranked in the top 50, including three in the top 10.
Seniors Chip Deegan (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jack Tarzy (Medford, N.J.) led the way for the Midshipmen, placing tied for 63rd with a 9-over par 225. Deegan opened up with the hot club, finishing the first round with a 1-over par 73 and following up in the afternoon with a 3-over par 75. He closed out the tournament with a 5-over par 77. Tarzy, meanwhile, struggled in Monday's opening 36 holes, turning in a 5-over par 77 and a 7-over par 79. However, the team captain finished the tournament strong with a 3-under par 69 to catapult up in the standings.
Danny Auffant (Jr / Bellevue, Wash.) finished just 2 strokes behind the senior tandem in 71st with an 11-over par 227. He was consistent throughout the tournament with a 76, 75 and 76. Sebastian Alonzo (Fr / Azusa, Calif.) turned in a 16-over par 232 (77-76-79), while Hudson Mitchell (Fr / Pensacola, Fla.) rounded out the group with a 23-over par 239. After a rough opening round (+12, 84), he came back to post rounds of 78 and 77.
Clemson, ranked 36th nationally, took the team title by 4 strokes over eighth-ranked Texas Tech and unranked West Virginia. The Tigers covered the 54-hole tournament with a 20-under par 844 (294-274-276), while the Raiders (288-283-277) and Mountaineers (285-284-279) both finished 16-under. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma and 38th-ranked TCU tied for fourth with an 9-under par 855, while fifth-ranked Arkansas placed sixth with a 6-under par 858.
Oklahoma State's Preston Stout won individual medalist honors with an 11-under par 205 (69-67-69), edging out Clemson's Thomas Higgins by a stroke (71-66-69=206).
Meanwhile, Navy's James Devore (So / Porter, Texas) tied for 13th at the Bridgeport Collegiate Individual played in conjunction with the Mountaineer Invitational. Devore turned in a 10-over par 226 with rounds of 71, 76 and 79. George Mason's Joe Johnson took the title with a 7-under par 209 (73-69-67)
Navy will used the next week and a half to prepare for the 2026 Patriot League Championship slated for April 24-26 at the West Point Golf Course in West Point, N.Y.
