  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Andy McCann, who joined the program as an assistant coach in the fall of 2014, is no stranger to the Naval Academy, nor the Navy squash program. The 2002 Naval Academy graduate was a four-year letterwinner for Craig Dawson’s Midshipmen squash program, who served as team captain his senior year. Additionally, McCann is one of just five players in program history to win the USS Barb Squash Racquets Perpetual Trophy three or more times, winning it in each of his last three seasons (2000-01-02).

Upon graduation, McCann spent 11 years as a surface warfare officer in the United States Navy.

Aboard the USS Underwood FFG-36 based out of Mayport, Fla., he served as Repair Division Officer and Damage Control Assistant and served deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, Caribbean Sea and Persian Gulf.

McCann’s Shore Duty tour was in Newport, R.I. at the Surface Warfare Officer School where he earned his Master Training Specialist.

In his First Department Head Tour, he served as Operations Officer aboard the USS Howard DDG-83 out of San Diego and was deployed to the 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).  In his Second Department Head Tour, he was aboard the USS Shiloh in Yokosuka, Japan, where he was also the Operations Officer and again deployed to the 7th Fleet AOR.

McCann transitioned out of the Navy in May of 2013 and currently works on the OPNAV Staff.

McCann is married to Ashley Valanzola, a 2010 graduate of the Naval Academy.
