Bobby Carter

Bobby Carter joined the Navy track and field staff in September 2018 as the jumps coach after working at Oral Roberts University and the University of Nebraska. At Navy, Carter also assists with the day-to-day operations and serves as an Instructor of Physical Disciplines at the Academy.
 
In his first three seasons with the Midshipmen, Navy has won seven Patriot League team titles (men’s indoor – 2020; women’s indoor – 2019, ’20; men’s outdoor – 2019, ’21: women’s outdoor – 2019, ’21), as well as capturing eight Stars in the Army-Navy Star Meet (men’s indoor – 2020, ’21; women’s indoor – 2020, ’21; men’s outdoor – 2019, ’21; women’s outdoor – 2019, ’21), which is part of the overall Star Series presented by USAA.
 
Despite COVID difficulties throughout the year, Navy went undefeated in 2021. The Midshipmen won the indoor and outdoor Stars for both the men’s and women’s teams against rival Army. Navy swept the Patriot League Outdoor Championships for the third consecutive season, while sweeping the IC4A / ECAC Outdoor Championships for the first time in program history.
 
During the 2021 season, Carter instructed a trio of All-Patriot League performers and four All-East honorees. Breanna Mealer (’22) and Audrey Fernandez (’21) finished second in the long jump and triple jump, respectively, to earn All-Patriot League distinction. On the men’s side, Clayton Thompson (’21), who was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet, finished second in the long jump to earn All-Conference honors. At the ECAC Outdoor Championship, Ann Jackson (’21) finished in the top 8 of the long jump, while Evelyn Berecz (’21) finished in the top 8 in the triple jump for the duo to earn All-East accolades. Caden Dailey (’23) and Josh Leggett (’23) each earned All-East recognition at the IC4A Outdoor Championship in the long jump.
 
Carter worked directly with a pair of student-athletes who broke Navy records in 2021. Caden Dailey (’23) set the school record for the men’s long jump (7.58m / 24-10.50) during indoor competition, while Ann Jackson (’21) broke the women’s outdoor long jump record (6.05m / 19-10.25). Jackson finished her senior season as one of Navy’s 16 student-athletes who competed at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor East Preliminaries, taking part in the long jump.
 
The 2019-20 season saw Navy capture both the Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Championship titles. For the men, it was the 11th win in program history and the seventh time in the last eight years that the Midshipmen won the title. On the women’s side, it was the fifth indoor title in program history and marked the second consecutive win for the Mids.
 
Under Carter's tutelage, Caden Dailey (’23), Audrey Fernandez (’21), and Cedric Williams (’20) won individual Patriot League Indoor Championships, while Williams and Breanna Mealer (’22) earned Second Team All-Patriot League Distinction. Dailey won the long jump, finishing ahead of Williams who claimed second in the event. Williams claimed the triple jump title on the men’s side, while Fernandez took home the honor for the women. Mealer came in second in the long jump to earn all-conference accolades. In addition, Dailey earned Men's Rookie of the Meet honors for his efforts at the Patriot League Indoor Championship.
 
The Navy men also broke a pair of school records this season, setting new benchmarks in the 1-mile run and the 60m hurdles, while the Mids’ women broke the school record in eight events – 60m, 200m, 400m, pole vault, triple jump, weight throw, pentathlon, and 4x400m relay. Carter directly worked with Audrey Fernandez (’21) who topped the Mids’ best mark in the triple jump (12.40m / 40-08.25).
 
During the 2018-19 campaign, the women’s team capture the Patriot League Indoor Championship for the first time since 2011. The outdoor season saw the men’s and women’s team sweep the conference championship for the second consecutive season. The men won the PL Championship for the sixth-straight year, recording a conference-best 289 points, winning 15 of 22 events at the meet, while the women’s win marked the second consecutive title.
 
At the Patriot League Indoor Championship, Cedric Williams (’20) was named the Field Athlete of the Meet, as well as the Top Point Scorer on the men's side. Williams won the long jump (7.29m / 23-11.00) and the triple jump (14.90m / 48-10.75) to score an individual best 20 points in the meet.
 
The 2018-19 season also saw Williams compete at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminaries in the triple jump, qualifying for the postseason with a PR of 15.22m (49-11.25) at the Army-Navy Star Series Meet during the outdoor season.
 
On the women’s side, Navy had a pair of records broken in the horizontal jumps. Evelyn Berecz (’21) set the school record in the triple jump (12.20m / 40-00.50) during the indoor season, while Breanna Mealer (’22) registered a school-record distance of 5.96m (19-06.75) in the long jump during the outdoor season.
 
Prior to his arrival at Navy, Carter was responsible for developing six All-Americans, 14 individual conference champions, and 10 school record-holders.
 
Carter started with Oral Roberts track and field in July 2017 after time at his alma mater, Nebraska where he was a two-time All-American for the Huskers, finishing 12th overall in the long jump at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships and seventh as a member of the Huskers' 4x100m relay team at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
 
In his first season at ORU, Carter quickly made his own mark in the NCAA and The Summit League with 10 school records, 10 individual Summit League Championships and two NCAA second team All-Americans. At Oral Roberts, Carter coached Mercy Abire (long jump) and Israel Nelson (110m Hurdles) to All-American honors during the 2018 outdoor season. Abire qualified for Regionals with a PR and school-record distance of 6.50m (21-04.00) in the long jump at the Summit League Championship, while Nelson clocked a time of 13.81 in the 110m hurdles to earn All-American distinction.
 
At Nebraska, Carter coached four All-Americans, including two long jumpers (Isaiah Griffith, Tierra Williams) and a triple jumper (Angela Mercurio) at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championship. Carter also tutored Kaiwan Culmer, who was an All-American triple jumper during the 2016-17 indoor season.
 
Under Carter's guidance, Griffith also won the USATF Junior Outdoor Triple Jump Championship with a mark of 16.21m (53-2.25). Culmer posted top triple jump performance of 16.08m (52-09.00), while Mercurio notched a distance of 13.38m (43-10.00) in the event. Mercurio was a two time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2016, 2017).
 
Carter is certified by the USTFCCCA in Strength and Conditioning, Meet Management, and Program Management and also holds USA Track and Field Level I Certification.
 
In addition to his success on the track, Carter was also a Scholar-Athlete at Nebraska. He and his wife Nataly have two sons, Maiyan and Kobe.
