Michael Coppolino

Coppolino was hired in June of 2023 as the associate head coach for the Navy women’s basketball team and begins his second season with the team in 2024-25.

In his first season with the Mids, Coppolino made an immediate impact on the program and played a leading role in a 13-game turnaround that saw the team go 8-4 down the stretch, finishing just one game out of second place and two out of first in the Patriot League.

Focusing on Navy’s defense and specifically its post play, Coppolino’s mentees blocked 3.6 shots per game and grabbed 36.7 rebounds per contest. That block average ranked 106th nationally, while the rebounding pace was second-best in the Patriot League, 164th in the nation. Navy improved over 240 positions in both its turnovers forced per game (17.16) and steals per game (8.6) averages from 2022-23 to 2023-24.

Most recently the head coach at George Fox University from 2019 through 2023, Coppolino led the Bruins to a 51-37 record over his four seasons at the helm of the Oregon-based program. He immediately found success at George Fox in his debut season as he led the Bruins to a 23-6 overall record and an appearance in the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short. Off the court, Coppolino’s squads were strong in the classroom as well they had the 12th-best GPA in NCAA DIII for 2019. During his four seasons, six different Bruin players earned All-Northwest Conference honors.

Prior to leading the George Fox program, Coppolino won 91 games over six years as the head coach of Mount St. Mary College in New York. Taking over the Knights in an interim basis in 2013-14, he quickly grabbed the full-time position and turned the program’s fortunes around with three consecutive years of 19-plus wins in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. He was twice named the Skyline Conference’s Coach of the Year (2016-17 and 2017-18), while leading MSMC to the 2019 NCAA Tournament on the strength of an 18-0 conference mark and a 23-6 overall record. Overall, as a collegiate head coach, Coppolino is 142-106.

A 2007 graduate from Eckerd College with a degree in business management, Coppolino completed a master's degree in business administration at Alfred University in 2012. Additionally, he worked in athletics as a clubhouse attendant with the Boston Red Sox, as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Alfred University and with the men’s basketball and golf programs at Mount St. Mary. Coppolino in his wife Jessica are proud parents to their son, Carter.
