ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Nov. 10) - An important weekend looms ahead for the Navy sailing team as the Midshipmen will travel to various Atlantic Coast Championship competitions.
The Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship, held in Kings Point, N.Y., will feature teams sailing doublehanded FJ and Vanguard 15 boats. Travis Weber, Emmy Spencer, Mike Stapleton, Sarah Atwater, Ricky Lang, Thienchai Punyafong and Justin Smith will represent Navy at the event.
Nearby St. Mary's College will be the site for this weekend's Atlantic Coast Freshman Championship. Navy will send Robyn Rey, Deniz Baykan, Chris Clevinger, Ivan Millman, John Ivey and Jackson Sieglinger to race in doublehanded FJ boats. In addition to Navy, other teams in the fleet of 14 include Boston University, South Florida, Brown and the College of Charleston.
The Midshipmen prepared for this regatta by competing in last weekend's Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association's (MAISA) Freshman Regatta in Annapolis. Navy placed third overall in the two-division regatta. Justin Smith, Jamie Cox and Ivan Millman placed fifth in the A Division, while Doug Morea, Paula Pecen and Chris Clevinger placed fourth in the B Division.
Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will co-host the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship this weekend. Sailors from Navy, Georgetown, Old Dominion, Princeton and others will race in doublehanded Larks and FJ boats. Julia Lillis, Kate Clemens, Emily duPont, Lydia Pearson, Lindsay Bartel and Alexa Bestoso will race for Navy.
Navy's women's team placed fourth at last weekend's MAISA Fall Women's Championship in Geneva, N.Y. Julia Lillis and Kate Clemens posted a third-place finish in the A Division, with Emily duPont and Lindsay Bartel placing seventh in the B Division.
