ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team continued its fall season Saturday and Sunday with a pair of road regattas, highlighted by a first-place finish at the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y.

Competing at Harvard for the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament, the Midshipmen were part of a 16-team fleet from across the country. After a delay waiting for wind, the first day saw six races completed per division in a light easterly, while racing concluded on Sunday in a puffy and shifty northeasterly breeze. The conditions were tricky and Navy had its ups and downs on the Charles River, as the Mids wound up seventh overall with senior
Ava Farley and juniors
Kate Zurinskas,
Darby Dryden and
Mary Dwyer finishing eighth in the "A" division while junior
Josie Sherry, senior
Eleanor Niehoff and sophomore
Sarah McNelly took fourth in the "B" division.Â

The major open regatta of the weekend, the Merchant Marine Academy-hosted Nevins Trophy had a very deep 17-team nationwide field with tight racing throughout the fleet. A relatively young Navy squad saw extreme winds forecasted for Sunday, as the regatta was shortened to one day. Saturday featured an early light northeast wind that faded and switched east late, and the wind built to moderate levels by the end of the day to allow six races to be completed per division. Navy remained near the top of the leaderboard throughout the day, and the Mids took the lead by winning race 5A and solidified the win with all top-3 finishes to close the event as the winners. Sophomore
Kyle Reinecke and freshman
Ana Lynch Smith sailed an amazing series, scoring 15 points in six races for the overall win in the "A" division while rookie
Leo Robillard and sophomore
Melania Gonzalez finished fourth in the "B" division.

Navy continues the season on Oct. 18-19 with the Open Atlantic Coast Championship Finals, the Tom Curtis Regatta and the Yale Women's Regatta.
