Scouting Tulane
The Green Wave play host to Louisville before traveling to Annapolis with a potent offense and a leaky defense. Tulane is averaging 32.1 points per contest and giving up 39.6 points per game. It is averaging 143.4 yards per game on the ground, 296.2 through the air and 439.7 yards of total offense. Meanwhile is allowing 250.9 on the ground, 236.4 through the air and 487.3 yards of total offense.
Running back Mewelde Moore has rushed for 1,135 yards and five touchdowns and has caught a team-high 51 passes for 607 yards and seven touchdowns. Royde Williams has 44 catches for 664 yards and eight touchdowns. Quarterback Patrick Ramsey has completed 186 of his 336 passes for 2,151 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The Green Wave defense is led by Adrian Mitchell, who has recorded 98 tackles, two interceptions and has recovered two fumbles.
Toledo Hangs On To Beat Navy
Chester Taylor rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns, while Tavares Bolden completed 21 of his 29 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown as Toledo hung on to defeat Navy, 21-20, in front of a MAC Record crowd of 36,852 on Homecoming at the Glass Bowl.
The Mids jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.) scored from 12 yards out, while David Hills (Sr./Latham, N.Y.) kicked a 42-yard field goal. The Rockets made it 10-7 right before the half on a seven-yard run by Taylor.
Toledo took its first lead of the game early in the third quarter when Taylor scored on a nine-yard touchdown run. The Mids went back up on top with 7:41 left in the third quarter when wide receiver Chandler Sims (Jr./Oklahoma City, Okla.) threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Tony Lane (So./Wrens, Ga.).
After Sims' touchdown pass, the Navy defense shut the Toledo offense down on three plays and Rocket punter Brandon Hannum got off just a 21-yard punt.
Navy took the ball over on its own 45 with a chance to add to its lead, but on first down Madden fumbled the snap and lost seven yards. On second down, Rashad Jamal (Sr./Berkeley, Calif.), carrying the ball for just the third time all year, fumbled and Toledo's Jake McLean recovered at the Navy 42.
The defense, though, rose up and got the ball right back for the offense as Clyde Clark (Jr./Austin, Texas) drilled Toledo receiver Carl Ford, after Ford caught a pass at the Navy 20, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Pete Beuttenmuller (Jr./Wellington, Fla.).
After the Mids picked up a first down, Madden hit fullback Marlon Terrell (Sr./Dallas, Texas) with a swing pass and Terrell ran the ball 16 yards to the 50 where he was hit by Sid Daniels and Andy Boyd recovered his fumble at the Toledo 46.
Eight plays later, Bolden hit Andrew Clarke with a 13-yard touchdown pass to give the Rockets a 21-17 lead.
Navy came right back and drove the ball from its own 26 down to the Toledo 18, but could not put the ball in the end zone and settled for a 30-yard field goal by Hills to make it 21-20.
After the Navy defense held, the Mids got the ball back on their own 20 with 4:08 remaining. Lane picked up six yards on first down, but then lost two yards on second down. On third and six, Madden's pass to Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Davidson, N.C.) was incomplete and the Mids elected to punt with just 2:47 left and two timeouts left. Toledo picked up two first downs and Navy never got the ball back.
Madden rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Lane rushed for a career-high 91 yards on 11 carries. Madden completed seven of his 13 passes for 79 yards with one interception, while Gaddy caught four of Madden's seven completions for 79 yards.
Clark had his best game in a Navy uniform, coming up with five tackles, forcing a fumble and breaking up a pass. Josh Brindel (Jr./Ward, S.C.) recorded a career-high nine tackles and recovered a fumble, while Ryan Hamilton (Sr./Havertown, Pa.) had nine tackles. Mike Chiesl (Sr./The Woodlands, Texas) had a career-high eight tackles and recorded a sack.
Navy-Toledo Notes
Derek Jaskowiak's (Jr./Chesterfield, Mo.) blocked field goal in the first quarter was Navy's first blocked kick of the year ... Navy led after the first quarter, at the half and at the end of the third quarter for the first time all year ... wide receiver Chandler Sims' (Jr./Oklahoma City, Okla.) touchdown pass to Tony Lane was the first-non-quarterback touchdown pass for Navy since Billy Hubbard threw a 34-yard touchdown pass at Georgia Tech on Sept. 16, 2000 ... the Mids have lost their last four games by a total of 21 points ... Navy's 285 yards rushing were a season high ... Josh Brindel's (Jr./Ward, S.C.) fumble recovery in the first quarter was the first of his career ... Brindel also had a career-high nine tackles ... Clyde Clark's (Jr./Austin, Texas) forced fumble and Pete Beuttenmueller's (Jr./Wellington, Fla.) fumble recovery was the first of their careers ... Eric Roberts (Fr./Miami, Fla.) had his first-career carry, a five-yard run in the fourth quarter ... Mike Chiesl (Sr./The Woodlands, Texas) recorded a career-high eight tackles.
Close Calls
Navy has been unable to win close games, losing 12 of the last 14 games decided by seven points or less. The Mids are 0-3 in nailbiters this year, losing to Air Force, 24-18, Rutgers, 23-17, and Toledo, 21-20.
The Madden File
Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.) rushed for 121 yards against Toledo, running his 100-yard rushing games total to nine in 10-career starts. The only game Madden started and did not rush for 100 yards was Oct. 13 of this year when Rice held him to 94 yards on 34 carries, snapping a school-record streak of seven-consecutive 100-yard rushing days.
Madden's nine 100-yard rushing games are the second most in school history for a quarterback. Only Chris McCoy (1995-97) with 15 has more.
After being held out of the end zone against Rutgers, snapping a streak of eight-consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, Madden came back to score a rushing touchdown against Toledo. He has had at least one rushing touchdown in nine of his 10-career starts.
Madden has thrown for more than 100 yards in four of his five starts this year, after not throwing for 100 yards in any of his five starts in 1999. Madden threw for 79 yards, but should have had many more as both Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Davidson, N.C.) and Marshaun Minter (Fr./South Euclid, Ohio) dropped passes that would have resulted in long gains. Minter's missed opportunity would have been a touchdown.
Gaddy Coming Up With Big Plays
Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Davidson, N.C.) had a big day against Boston College, catching two passes for 87 yards and his first-career touchdown. The touchdown catch came on Navy's first drive, a 49-yard strike from quarterback Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.). He came back against Air Force and caught four passes for 52 yards in Navy's loss to the Falcons. Against Rutgers, Gaddy caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Madden and against Toledo, Gaddy caught four passes for 62 yards.
Gaddy is Navy's leading receiver in catches (17) and yards (296) and is tied with Tony Lane (So./Wrens, Ga.) for touchdowns (2).
A Dangerous Lane
Tony Lane (So./Wrens, Ga.) set a school record for kickoff return yardage against Temple, returning five kicks for 205 yards. The previous record was 170 yards on seven returns set by Michael Jefferson in 1994. Lane proved to be a threat the first time he ever touched the ball in a college game, returning Temple's second kickoff of the game 67 yards, setting up a Navy field goal. Lane's 41.0 average was also a school record. The previous record was 38.5 yards, set by Pat McGrew in 1997. Navy also set a school record for team kickoff return yardage against the Owls, returning eight kicks for 247 yards. The previous record was 198 yards on nine returns against Penn State in 1971.
Lane returned six kicks for 147 yards, including a long of 51 yards, against Georgia Tech and returned three kicks for 73 yards against Boston College. Against Air Force, he returned one kickoff for 25 yards and against Rice he returned two kickoffs for 47 yards. Against Rutgers, Lane returned four kickoffs for 102 yards and against Toledo, Lane returned two kickoffs for 56 yards.
Averaging 28.5 yards per kickoff return, Lane is ranked 12th in the nation in kickoff returns.
Lane is also averaging 141.6 yards per game of all-purpose yards, which ranks 20th in the country.
Lane is showing that he is more than a kickoff returner, scoring a rushing touchdown against Boston College and then catching a 54-yard touchdown pass from Brian Madden (Sr./Lawton, Okla.) against Air Force. Against Toledo, Lane rushed for a career-high 91 yards on 11 carries and also caught two passes for 29 yards and one touchdown. Lane is tied with Chandler Sims (Jr./Oklahoma City, Okla.) for second on the team in receptions with 11 and is tied with Jeff Gaddy (Sr./Davidson, N.C.) with a team-high two touchdown receptions. Lane is also tied with Marlon Terrell (Sr./Dallas, Texas) for second on the team in rushing yards with 141 yards.
Skaggs Impressive
Sophomore punter John Skaggs (Cantonment, Fla.) averaged a career-best 49.3 yards per punt on four punts in Navy's 24-18 loss to Air Force. Skaggs has been impressive all year. He averaged 46 yards per punt on five attempts in his collegiate debut against Temple, 40.8 yards on six kicks against Georgia Tech, 48.8 yards per punt on four punts against Boston College, 45.5 yards on four punts against Rice (including a career-long 62 yarder) and 46 yards on five punts against Rutgers. His only bad night was a 30.5 average on two punts against Toledo.
The All-America candidate is averaging 44.7 yards per punt, the seventh-best average in the country. He is on pace to break the school record of 43.8 yards, set by Bill Busik in 1941.
Hills Nearly Perfect On Field Goals
David Hills (Sr./Latham, N.Y.) has been almost perfect on field goals this year, making both of his attempts against Temple, Air Force, Rice and Toledo and making one out of two against Rutgers. Against Temple, Hills made field goals from 24 and 36 yards, against Air Force he was good from 23 and 37 yards, against Rice, Hills was on the money from 40 and 43 yards and against Toledo he connected from 42 and 30 yards. Hills missed from 22 yards out and was good from 27 yards against Rutgers.
Hills has made 18 of his 22-career attempts (.818). He is 0-1 from inside the 20, 5-6 from 20-29 yards out, 7-8 from 30-39 yards and 8-9 from 40-49 yards. His career long is 45 yards, which he made in last year's game at Air Force.
Terrell Stepping Up
Marlon Terrell (Sr./Dallas, Texas) is finally getting a chance to show what he can do after battling a hamstring injury the last two years.
Terrell rushed for a career-high 79 yards in his first-career start against Rutgers. He recorded career-long runs of 28 yards in the second quarter and then 43 yards in the third quarter. He also scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, his first rushing touchdown of the season and the second of his career. Terrell followed up his performance against Rutgers with a 51-yard rushing day on nine carries against Toledo.
Against Rice, Terrell caught his first-career pass, a Navy season-long 65 yarder from Madden.
Red Zone
Navy has scored on .739 percent of its trips inside the 20 (17-23), with 10 of the 23 (.435) resulting in touchdowns.
The defense has given up points 23-of-28 times (.821) when the opposition reaches the end zone. Nineteen of the 28 trips have resulted in touchdowns (.679).
Problems Out Of The Gate
Navy has been outscored, 153-45 (21.9-6.4), in the first half of games. The Mids have led just one game at the half-10-7 at Toledo. The Mids have given up 70 points in the first quarter and 83 points in the second quarter. Navy has scored just 26 first-quarter points and 19 second-quarter points. Navy has regrouped and played much better in the second half, being outscored by just an 89-77 count (12.7-11). The Mids have outscored the opposition, 53-41, in the fourth quarter.
