PRINCETON, N.J.. - Navy's lightweight crew team was involved in a number of close races against Princeton, Saturday on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J.
The Tigers narrowly edged the Mids by just over three seconds in the first varsity race. Both teams had good starts and Navy built an early four-seat lead which it held until the midway point in the race. After the two teams traded small leads, Navy again took a several-foot advantage with about 500 meters left in the contest. Princeton increased its stroke rate and used a strong sprint to hold off Navy at the end.
While both teams had good starts in the first varsity race, the two teams each had poor starts in the second varsity competition. The two boats were even after 500 meters, but Princeton built a lead in the second 500 meters of the course. Navy was able to close the gap in the last quarter of the race, but lost the race, 6:16.5-6:20.41.
Princeton also picked up six-second victories in the third varsity and first novice races, but Navy soundly defeated the Tigers in both the second novice (21 seconds) and fourth varsity (10 seconds) races.
"All in all I was happy with our performance today," said Navy head coach Dale Hurley. "We had two good wins, two losses by less than four seconds and two more losses by less than six seconds, with all of the races coming against one of the top programs in the country. Plus, we were missing several of our team members due to illness, so I know we can and will improve on our times in the future."
Navy will be back in action on Saturday when the Mids compete at the George Washington Invitational.
