ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The eighth-ranked Navy rifle team easily defeated the visiting Virginia Military Institute Keydets Saturday morning at the Bancroft Range, 6127-5681.
"We had a pretty good day overall," Navy head rifle coach Bill Kelley said. "The smallbore team was fairly strong, especially noting that we did not have Luke Shank (Sr./Fort Wayne, Ind.). The air rifle was a little better overall, but we got good scores from James Kauber (Jr./Burlington, Wash.) and Mike Miller (Fr./Albuquerque, N.M.)."
Navy was led in the smallbore discipline by David Bachta (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.), Bill Tolson (Sr./Oak Harbor, Wash.), Kauber and Miller, who combined to shoot 4597 ahead of VMIs' total of 4297. Tolson posted the highest-smallbore score in the match (1162) followed by Miller with the second-highest score (1151).
In the air rifle discipline, Kauber and Miller teamed with Marta Jung (So./Reno, Nev.) and Walter Warren (Sr./San Antonio, Texas) to give the Mids a 1530-1384 victory. Miller paced the Mids in the air rifle with a score of 389 followed by Kauber with a score of 387.
Navy returns to action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. when the Mids take on top-ranked Alaska-Fairbanks in Palmyra, Pa.
