PALMYRA, Pa. -- The eighth-ranked Navy rifle team's dual-match record fell to 6-1 on the 2001-02 season after falling to No. 1 Alaska-Fairbanks in a neutral-site match Sunday afternoon, 6257-6102.
UAF All-American Matt Emmons, who has shot a perfect 400 score in the air rifle discipline this season, saved one of his best matches of the season for Sunday's encounter with the Mids. Emmons' 399 in air rifle competition helped Alaska-Fairbanks to a 1558-1511 team victory over the Mids in the discipline. He also shot a season-high 1191 with the smallbore rifle to lead UAF to a 4699-4591 advantage.
Freshman Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn.) had his best match of the season for Navy, shooting a season-high 1158 in the smallbore discipline. Albright teamed up with classmate Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M.), David Bachta (Sr./Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Bill Tolson (Sr./Oak Harbor, Wash.) to combine for the Mids' smallbore score.
Miller, James Kauber (Jr./Burlington, Wash.), Marta Jung (So./Reno, Nev.) and Walter Warren (Sr./San Antonio, Texas) were all members of Navy's four-person air rifle squad, with Warren and solo shooter Matt Walters (Sr./Allentown, Pa.) each posting 383 efforts in the discipline.
Navy will next compete Feb. 9 when it hosts Duquesne at 8 a.m. in the Bancroft Range. The date will serve as the Mids' NCAA-qualifying match.
