ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Penn State (6-8) scored three runs in each of the first three innings and went on to rout Navy (5-12), 12-1, Saturday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. The Mids committed eight errors in the game.
"It wasn't a good day for us," said Navy head coach Steve Whitmyer. "We need to put this one behind us and get out there tomorrow and try to get things turned around."
Navy starter Rich McDevitt gave up nine runs, four of which were earned, on 10 base hits in 2 2/3 innings.
"McDevitt didn't have a good start today, but he is going to be a key pitcher for us and he needs to be ready to go the next time it is his turn."
One bright spot for Navy was the bullpen as Zach Poelma, Justin Miller and Jimmy Lamz gave up just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Navy continued to struggle at the plate, collecting just five hits. Brad Hager had a double, while David Woolsey, Rusty Hearn, Matt Lukevics and Jason Guidos all singled. Clint Eury had three hits and three RBI for the Nittany Lions.
The two teams will play again tomorrow. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium.
