Higgins Named Assistant Football Coach

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Navy head football coach Paul Johnson announced Wednesday that Dan Higgins has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Higgins replaces Chad Huff, who left for a high school head coaching job in Mississippi. Higgins will assist Ivin Jasper with the quarterbacks and fullbacks.

"I have known Dan a long time and he will be an excellent addition to the staff," said Johnson. "He has strong ties in the state of Florida, which is a state we are going to recruit heavily."

Higgins comes to Navy from Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, Fla., where he was the head football coach for the last nine seasons. While at Eau Gallie, he was the District 5A Coach of the Year twice (1994 and 1998), the District 6A Coach of the Year once (1995) and the Florida Today Space Coast Coach of the Year once (1994). In 1995, his team was the 6A sectional runner-up and in 1998 Eau Gallie was the 5A Regional runner-up.

Higgins, a 1977 graduate of Auburn where he received his B.S. in Education, has an extensive coaching background on both the high school and collegiate level.

Besides coaching at Eau Gallie High School, Higgins coached at West Nassau High School in Callahan, Fla. (offensive coordinator in 1977-78), Choctawhatchee High School in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. (freshman coach in 1979), Fernandina Beach High School (offensive coordinator from 1981-83, head coach in 1984), and at Camden County High School in St. Mary's, Ga. (offensive coordinator in 1988-89).

Higgins' college experience includes stints at Auburn (1980, freshman coach), Georgia Southern (offensive graduate assistant in 1986), Hawai'i (offensive graduate assistant in 1987), Valparaiso (running backs coach in 1990) and at Lee's McRae College (offensive coordinator, 1991-92).
