ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite the loss of just two full-time starters, the Navy wrestling team and head coach Bruce Burnett will have numerous talented freshmen to groom as part of his 2002-03 squad.
"We have about 40 freshman in the room, and their skill level right now is much higher than the previous year," Navy head coach Bruce Burnett said. "I am excited to work with them once classes start in the fall and we really get the season going. There is a lot of good talent in the group. I hope we finally get to the point where we have some freshmen step in and start for us."
Jon Kane, a 174/184-pounder from Portland, Maine, won the Maine State High School Tournament his senior year and was the 2002 National Wrestling Coaches Association National Champion. Kane compiled a career record of 109-17 at Deering High School, including an undefeated 36-0 mark as a senior.
Chris Pogue brings impressive credentials to the squad in the 174-pound weight class. Pogue, a native of Chesapeake, Va., posted a career record of 126-36 at Deep Creek High School and finished second at the Virginia State Tournament and the AAU Junior National Championship. He is also a three-time Virginia State Freestyle wrestling champion.
Along with Pogue from Virginia, Montclair native Chris Miosi is a two-time 2002 Virginia Independent School State Champion and finished second at the National Prep Tournament. Miosi finished his prep career with a 153-21 record and three top-six finishes at the National Prep Tournament.
Josh Phillips won the Illinois State Championship as a senior at University High School with a 41-0 record to finish 136-24 overall. Phillips recorded a fourth-place finish at the AAU Scholastic National Duals.
San Antonio native Ted Marley won the Texas State Championship as a senior after a fourth-place finish as a junior. Marley is a two-time Texas State Freestyle Champion and a three-time Texas Cadet/Junior National Team member from Winston Churchill High School.
Andrew Adams comes to Navy via Dublin, Ohio, where he posted an eighth-place finish at Senior Nationals and finished his prep career with a 113-48 record. Adams is one of the top candidates to replace departed Navy standout Mike Bigrigg in the 197-pound weight class. Matt Gulosh finished fourth at the Ohio State Tournament and will join his brother, Nate, who will be a sophomore.
Other talented newcomers include Deon Barrett, Adam Brochetti, Craig Dziewiatkowski, Tanner Garrett, Cody Rapp, Andrew Rexroad, Steve Szachta and Rick Wyman.
