ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy wrestlers
Josh Koderhandt (141) and
Danny Wask (174) were selected as this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Athletes of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman.
The duo garnered All-America honors for placing sixth (Koderhandt) and eighth (Wask) in their weight classes at last week's NCAA Championship.
It is the first time two Midshipmen earned All-America status in the same season since 2020 when Tanner Skidgel (second team) and Spencer Carey (honorable mention) were recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) when the championship was canceled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Navy last had two All-Americans in the same year through competition in 2009 when Bryce Saddoris (sixth place) and Joe Baker (eighth place) garnered the honors.Â
Koderhandt entered the tournament seeded fourth in his weight class. He became the second Mid to earn All-America honors at 141 pounds (Mark Conley, 2001 and '02). The Belleville, Ill., native posted a 4-3 record at the championship.
The senior team captain defeated North Carolina's 29th-seeded Jayden Scott (4-1 / SV-1), Cornell's 20th-seeded Joshua Sanders (Fall / 3:32), Oklahoma State's seventh-seeded Tagen Jamison (4-1 / SV-1) and Iowa State's ninth-seeded Jacob Frost (Fall / :59).
Wask entered his second NCAA Championship seeded seventh in his weight class. Â He became the fifth Mid to earn All-America honors at 174 pounds and the first since Matt Stolpinski, who finished in seventh place in 2008.
The sophomore from Wantage, N.J., compiled a 3-3 record over the three-day tournament with his wins coming against Purdue's 26th-seeded Brody Baumann (15-0), Iowa State's 23rd-seeded MJ Gaitan (12-4) and Penn's 22nd-seeded Nick Incontrera (5-3).
