Navy Wins President?s Trophy

Annapolis, Md. -- Navy rifle defeated Air Force, Army and Coast Guard today in a battle of the service academies to earn the 2003 President's Trophy. The Mids continued to rewrite history as they broke the school record for team aggregate score in the five-person squad format with a 7729.
Army came in second on the day, with a 7639 total score, while Air Force took third place with a 7476 to edge out fourth-place Coast Guard, who finished with a 7461. Navy's previous record in the five-person format was a 7710 that the Mids scored at Army on Feb. 17, 2001.
Junior Matt Albright (Shelton, Conn./Christian Heritage School) tallied a a meet-high 1173 in smallbore, while freshman Sarah Bergman (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) posted a 391 in air rifle to lead the entire field of competitors. Albright added a 388 in air rifle, while junior Mike Miller (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) posted an 1164 in smallbore and a 388 air rifle mark for the Mids. Freshman Chris Schneider (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) also scored in both disciplines, posting an 1154 and a 387. Junior Kevin Wilson (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) notched an 1153 while senior Marta Jung (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) tacked on an 1145 to round out the smallbore scoring team. Sophomore Billy Carson (McDonough, Ga./Henry County) capped the air rifle score with a 384 to help the Mids achieve the victory.
?They worked really hard today,? head coach Bill Kelley noted of his team after the match. ?There was very tough competition, as the service academies are very strong in rifle. I think we're heading in the right direction at the end of the fall season.?
The Mids will be off next week, but will return to action with a match against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 8 a.m.
