Mids Crowned Patriot League Champions
The Navy women's outdoor track & field team captured the Patriot League Championship this weekend at Bucknell's Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium ending the two-day competition with an 11-point edge over Army, 139-128. The Mids maintained their momentum attained from leading the pack following Friday's events.
The Mids recorded their strongest performances of the meet in the field events, as indoor captain Joanne Uwujaren (Burke, Va.) was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet. She set a new meet record by winning the triple jump today with an NCAA Qualifier and ECAC Championship-qualifying mark of 39'5-1/4". Friday she won the long jump with a mark of 18'4-1/2".
Outdoor captain Shannon Crites (Powell, Ohio) tied her own Naval Academy record and also earned a spot at the upcoming ECAC Championship and NCAA Qualifier by leading the pack in the high jump with a mark of 5'7". Freshman Jennifer Leatherman (Timbo, Ark.) garnered her second top-three mark of the meet, as she placed third in the shot put at 41'7-3/4".
On the track, the 4x400m relay team of Amy Stokes (Fort Washington, Md.), Eva Tukarski (Crofton, Md.), Kacee Jossis (Boise, Idaho) and Tineisha Davis (Madisonville, Ky.) set a team season-best time and meet record with their first-place time of 3:47.17.
Davis also provided solid efforts in the 200 (25.04) for third place and in the 400 (55.23) to win the event. Stokes finished second in the 400 hurdles with a season-best time of 1:02.17.
Senior Lisa Procaccini (Vienna, Va.) earned second-place times in the 800 (2:15.16) and 1500 (4:36.24). Her time in the 800 set a new career best and was five-hundredths of a second behind event-winner Nicki Piper of host Bucknell. Freshman Sherri Flohr (Grafton, W. Va.) and sophomore Kristyn Kern (Commerce Township, Mich.) also won their respective sections of the 1500 with times of 4:48.45 and 4:53.51, respectively.
"We're really excited to win the championship," said Navy head coach Carla Criste. "I'm really proud of everyone, as they stepped up and performed better than we may have expected. It was a really exciting meet overall. The team really pulled together and won this meet as a team."
The Mids will next compete at the Towson Invitational, May 9-10, in Towson, Md.
